If you've been waiting for a taste of summer, Thursday may be your best opportunity for a while.

After a chilly start to the week, temperatures across much of Newfoundland are set to climb significantly on Thursday as warmer air spreads across the Island. In fact, many areas could see their warmest temperatures of the year so far, making for a welcome change after the recent stretch of cool weather.

The exception will be the Northern Peninsula, where a cold front will already be making its presence known. There, temperatures will struggle through the day with periods of rain and highs only in the 4°C to 6°C range.

That same cold front is the reason the warm weather won't stick around for long.

The front will move through Labrador tonight, reach the Northern Peninsula on Thursday, and then sweep across the rest of Newfoundland Thursday night into Friday. Behind it comes noticeably cooler air that will settle in for both Friday and Saturday.

While widespread rain isn't expected over the next few days, some areas will see periods of precipitation. The greatest chances will be across parts of the Northern Peninsula and southeastern Labrador. In fact, some higher elevations in those regions could even see a few wet snowflakes mixed in as we move through Friday and Friday night — another reminder that it's still early June in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Looking ahead to the weekend, rain chances begin to increase again by Sunday before drier weather returns early next week. Temperatures should remain close to seasonal levels, with signs that warmer air may start building back into the province during the middle part of next week.

For Labrador, cooler conditions arrive on Thursday before temperatures gradually recover through the weekend. By early next week, some areas, including Goose Bay, could be looking at a return to summer-like warmth.

For now, enjoy Thursday's warmth while it lasts — because a cooler reminder of Newfoundland and Labrador's ever-changing weather isn't far behind.
