Last night's storm is pulling away, and for most of us, the worst is behind us. The low tracked northeast off the Island overnight, bringing 10 to 50+ mm between yesterday and early this morning. As the system pulls away, gusty winds will be an issue for parts of eastern and northeastern Newfoundland.

This morning, the rain is over for the Avalon, the West Coast, and most of central Newfoundland. The only place still hanging onto steady rain is the Great Northern Peninsula, where the St. Anthony area will keep seeing showers into the late morning before things finally clear out there as well.

Now, don't expect a beautiful day just because the rain is ending. Behind the low comes cooler air, gusty northwest winds, and enough instability for scattered showers across much of the Island this afternoon. It'll be one of those days where you might see a few sunny breaks... then a shower five minutes later. Nothing like what we dealt with overnight, but you'll still want a jacket if you're heading outside. Skies will turn more clear overnight and set us up for a nice Friday.

The Avalon and Eastern Newfoundland

Expect a mix of cloud and sunshine with highs around 14°. The biggest story here is the wind. Westerlies will gust 50 to 65+ km/h through this morning and into the early afternoon before slowly easing later today. It'll feel coolest along the coast, while inland communities will squeeze out another degree or two.

Central Newfoundland & The Northeast Coast

This is the coolest part of the Island today. Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor only make it to around 9°, with scattered showers through the day and a brisk northwest wind making it feel even cooler. The northeast coast hangs onto the cloud and damp weather the longest.

The good news? Tomorrow is a completely different story. Sunshine and temperatures back into the low 20s.

West Coast

Showers gradually taper off through the day, with highs between 15 and 16°. while coastal areas and higher elevations stay a little cooler. Northwest winds remain in the 15 to 25 km/h range.

South Coast

Probably the pick of the Island today. Cloud clears fairly early, temperatures climb into the upper teens, and winds ease through the afternoon. If you're in Burgeo, Hermitage, or Connaigre, you'll likely end up with the nicest weather on the Island today.

Channel–Port aux Basques and Wreckhouse

The rain is gone, but the wind isn't. Northwest winds remain gusty through the day. Highs climb into the middle and upper teens.

Great Northern Peninsula and the Straits

St. Anthony hangs onto rain through the morning, picking up another 10 to 15 mm before things finally clear around midday. Once the rain moves out, skies brighten up through the afternoon, but it'll stay cool with highs only around 10° and a brisk north wind.

Tomorrow, though? Sunny and around 20°. Quite the turnaround.

Labrador

Completely different story. While Newfoundland is cleaning up after a storm, Labrador gets sunshine and summer-like temperatures. Lab West and Happy Valley-Goose Bay climb to around 23°, while even the north coast reaches close to 20° under mostly sunny skies. It's easily the nicest weather in the province today.

Looking ahead

Friday looks fantastic across just about all of Newfoundland and Labrador. Sunshine will be widespread, and temperatures climb back into the high teens and low-to-mid 20s. Central and western Newfoundland could reach 22 or 23°, while the Avalon gets back to around 18°.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Another disturbance looks set to bring the chance of showers back on Saturday across much of the Island. It doesn't look like a washout at this point, but the pattern stays active, and I'll have a better handle on timing in my afternoon forecast.
