After nearly two days of soaking rain across much of Newfoundland, the worst of the weather is finally behind us.

The low-pressure system that brought heavy rain to central and western Newfoundland has now moved off into the North Atlantic, leaving behind breezy conditions, a few lingering showers, and a much brighter forecast heading into the weekend.

Some communities picked up an impressive amount of rain. Westport topped the list with nearly 80 mm, while King's Point, Pasadena and Corner Brook all measured well over 70 mm. Grand Falls-Windsor received about 50 mm, and the runoff has the Exploits River running fast and high. Photos and videos from Bishop's Falls and Grand Falls-Windsor show just how quickly water levels responded to the rainfall. If you're near rivers or waterways over the next day or two, it's still a good idea to keep your distance as water levels slowly recede.

Fortunately, Mother Nature is about to hit the reset button.

Tonight will be mostly clear across Newfoundland and Labrador with light winds and cool temperatures. Some inland communities could dip low enough for a touch of frost by daybreak, although no advisories are in effect.

Friday is shaping up to be quite nice across the Island. Sunshine will dominate across Newfoundland, with afternoon highs reaching the upper teens along the east coast and climbing into the mid-20s across parts of central Newfoundland. Areas exposed to onshore winds along the south coast will stay a little cooler, but overall it's an excellent way to wrap up the work week.

Labrador tells a slightly different story. While the day will start sunny and warm, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon. Not everyone will see a storm, but the ones that do could produce wind gusts near 70 km/h, small hail up to 2 cm in diameter, and brief heavy downpours. Dry lightning is also something to watch closely given the ongoing wildfire concerns.

The weekend forecast continues to look encouraging.

Aside from the chance of an isolated afternoon shower in parts of central Newfoundland, both Saturday and Sunday will offer plenty of dry weather with comfortable temperatures in the teens and 20s.

If you're taking part in Sunday's Tely 10 Road Race in St. John's, the forecast couldn't be much better. Race-time temperatures will be in the teens under sunny skies with light winds, making for excellent running conditions from Paradise through downtown St. John's to Bannerman Park.

Looking into next week, the warming trend continues. Temperatures will remain above seasonal averages, although afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more common across interior Newfoundland and much of Labrador.

For now, though, after the rain we've just had, there's no doubt the sunshine will be a welcome sight.
