The rain has settled into much of Newfoundland this evening, and for some areas, especially central and northeastern parts of the Island, there's still a lot more to come before this system finally pulls away on Thursday.

The culprit is an area of low pressure tracking north from the Maritimes. Through tonight, the heaviest rain will gradually shift from western Newfoundland into central and northeastern areas. By midnight, much of central Newfoundland will be dealing with steady rain, while heavier pockets of rain continue to develop eastward. The Northern Peninsula will also remain wet through the night.

By Thursday morning, the rain will begin lifting northward, but not everyone will be done with it right away. A trailing trough will keep showers and rain around from Bay St. George through central Newfoundland and up toward Fogo Island during the morning. The good news? The rain will steadily end from southwest to northeast as the day goes on.

Rainfall totals will continue to add up. Parts of the Green Bay and White Bay regions could still see more than 50 mm before the system wraps up. Areas from Fogo Island to Gander and Clarenville may pick up another 30 to 40 mm, while the Avalon and Burin peninsulas generally see an additional 10 to 20 mm.

As the low pulls away Thursday, the focus shifts from rain to wind.

Strong northwesterly winds will develop across the Avalon Peninsula and portions of the northeast coast, with gusts approaching 80 km/h in some locations. Many other areas will also see a breezy day, so if Thursday is your garbage day, you may want to keep an eye on those bins.

Despite the gloomy start, Thursday's weather will improve significantly through the afternoon. Sunshine will gradually break out across much of Newfoundland, while Labrador enjoys a mostly sunny day from start to finish with temperatures climbing well into the teens and twenties inland.

Looking ahead, Friday is shaping up to be the pick of the forecast. Sunshine and lighter winds will dominate for much of the Province. There may be a few showers around on Saturday, while Sunday looks a little cooler. Beyond that, there are growing signs of a notable warm-up heading into Canada Day week.

After a soggy end to June, some summer-like weather may finally be ready to make an appearance.
