A low-pressure system sitting south of Newfoundland near Nova Scotia is going to make for a wet, windy, and downright miserable day across parts of the Island. Rain is already falling on the West Coast this morning, and Channel-Port aux Basques is reporting east winds around 40 km/h with gusts near 60. Winds through the Wreckhouse area are expected to ramp up significantly today, with gusts approaching 100 km/h. If you're travelling the Trans-Canada between Channel-Port aux Basques and Stephenville, you'll want to keep a close eye on conditions before heading out.
The rain will continue spreading eastward through the morning and into the afternoon. The heaviest rain is expected over western and northwestern Newfoundland, where areas from the West Coast through Green Bay and White Bay could pick up 40 to 50 mm by the time all is said and done. Locally higher amounts are possible.
Meanwhile, the Avalon gets the rain from this morning into early Thursday morning. The heaviest rain is expected this evening and tonight. Rainfall amounts should generally stay in the 5 to 10 mm range today, with another 10 to 20 mm possible this evening and tonight. The Great Northern Peninsula and Straits remain largely dry today, and most of Labrador misses this system altogether.
The rainfall forecast from today through early Thursday. June 24 and 25, 2026
Eastern Newfoundland and the Avalon
Rain arrives late this morning and continues through the afternoon. It'll be a cool, damp day with highs near 11°C and southeast winds around 20 km/h. Areas right along the coast, including St. John's, will be coolest. Areas of fog will be found as well. Rainfall amounts should generally range from 5 to 10 mm today, with more on the way tonight.
Central Newfoundland
Expect a rainy day from start to finish. Temperatures will be a touch milder than the Avalon, reaching 12 to 13°C, with southeast winds around 20 km/h. Rainfall amounts will generally range from 10 to 20 mm from Grand Falls-Windsor through the Northeast Coast. Another 10 to 20 mm will fall tonight.
West Coast
It's already raining in Corner Brook this morning, and conditions will only deteriorate as the day goes on. Highs will reach 14 to 15°C, with inland locations perhaps a degree or two warmer than exposed coastal locations. East winds will blow 20 to 30 km/h, strongest toward Stephenville. This is where the heaviest rain falls today. 20 to 40 mm of rain is forecast today, with a little more tonight before it ends.
South Coast
A wet and windy day is on tap. Rain continues through the day with temperatures near 13°C. East winds of 35 to 45 km/h along exposed coastlines will make for unpleasant conditions, especially through the Hermitage and Connaigre areas. Today’s expected rainfall: 30 to 50 mm.
Southwest Coast and Wreckhouse
East winds are already gusting close to 60 km/h in Channel-Port aux Basques, and they're expected to strengthen further as the day goes on. Gusts near 100 km/h are possible through the Wreckhouse area. Rain will continue throughout the day, with temperatures holding near 12°C. If you don't need to travel through the area, today would be a good day to avoid it. Rainfall of 30 to 50+ mm today.
Great Northern Peninsula and the Straits
A fairly quiet day compared to the rest of the Island. Expect mostly cloudy skies, only a slight chance of rain, and highs near 9°C. Northeast winds will be around 20 km/h. The main weather system doesn't really arrive here until Thursday.
Labrador
Most of Labrador escapes this system entirely.
Lab West will be mostly cloudy and mild with highs near 18°C and light northeast winds. The Goose Bay area may see a stray shower this morning but should remain largely dry afterward.
And perhaps the nicest forecast in the province today belongs to Nain, where sunshine and temperatures near 20°C are expected with a light southwest breeze.
Looking Ahead
The weather starts improving on Thursday as the low pulls away and northwest winds take over. Skies will gradually clear from west to east, although a few showers may linger across Central Newfoundland and parts of the Great Northern Peninsula.
It will turn breezy on the Avalon, with west-to-northwest wind gusts potentially topping 40 km/h. Wind speeds may gust up to 70 km/h in the afternoon. Lower than it looked yesterday, but still significant for the time of year.
Friday is shaping up to be the nicest day of the week. Sunshine returns province-wide, winds ease, and temperatures rebound nicely. St. John's should reach around 18°C, while Gander and Corner Brook climb into the low twenties. Lab West could see highs of 22 to 23°C.
In other words, if you can get through today's rain and wind, there's much better weather waiting on the other side.
