A cold front that will sweep across Newfoundland tonight, south of a developing low, will make its presence known tonight as cooler air continues to push southward across the Island. Areas of rain and showers that developed through central and eastern Newfoundland will gradually taper off overnight, although parts of the Avalon may hang onto a few showers through the early morning hours Friday.
By the time many people are heading out the door Friday morning, conditions should be improving. The showers will wind down, skies will begin to brighten, and much of the province will be left with a cooler, fresher air mass in place. Although for many it may not feel that different than this morning!
Friday's weather will be a tale of two Newfoundlands.
Across eastern, northeastern, and parts of central Newfoundland, temperatures will struggle to get much beyond the upper single digits and low teens. A northerly wind will keep things feeling cool, especially along the coast. While there should be some sunshine developing through the day, it won't be enough to completely overcome the chilly air.
Meanwhile, southern and western Newfoundland will enjoy a much nicer day. Sunshine will be plentiful, winds will be lighter, and temperatures will climb into the middle and even upper teens in some communities. It will be one of those days where a drive across the Island could feel like traveling between two different seasons.
One thing to keep in mind will be the wind along parts of the northeast coast. Gusts could approach 60 km/h Friday afternoon, adding an extra chill to the air despite the calendar saying June.
Looking ahead to the weekend, there are no major storms on the horizon for Newfoundland and Labrador. Temperatures will remain generally near or slightly below seasonal averages, with a mix of sun and cloud and only isolated showers in some areas.
The bigger story may end up being the bugs. Light winds expected this weekend could create ideal conditions for black flies and mosquitoes, particularly in wooded areas and inland communities. If you're planning to spend time outdoors, bug spray may be just as important as checking the forecast.
As for summer warmth, there are some encouraging signs later next week. Forecast guidance suggests temperatures may begin trending upward by the middle and latter part of the week. However, a large upper-level low parked over parts of Ontario and Manitoba continues to influence our weather pattern. As long as that feature remains in place, Newfoundland and Labrador will likely stay on the cooler side of normal more often than not.
That doesn't mean warmer days won't show up from time to time, but for now the overall pattern continues to favour temperatures that are near or slightly below average for mid-June.
