After a fairly quiet Wednesday evening across much of Newfoundland and Labrador, the weather is set to become a bit more unsettled overnight and into Thursday.
Showers currently over Labrador will slide south through the night, arriving in western Newfoundland after midnight and spreading eastward toward Central by Thursday morning. Some of the rain could be quite heavy at times, particularly in the Corner Brook area during the morning hours.
Overnight temperatures will range from near 1°C to 10°C in Labrador and between 4°C and 10°C across the Island. The coolest temperatures will be found in the east where skies remain clearer for longer, while western areas stay milder under increasing cloud cover ahead of the rain.
Thursday won't be a washout for everyone, but most areas will see at least some showers. Eastern Newfoundland may start the day dry with a few sunny breaks, but clouds and rain will gradually work eastward through the day. If you're planning to get outside in the St. John's area or elsewhere in the east, the morning will likely offer the best opportunity to stay dry before showers arrive during the afternoon and evening.
Meanwhile, an area of low pressure is expected to develop near the Northern Peninsula and White Bay/Green Bay region Thursday afternoon before tracking northeast. While it's June, the system may even bring some snow to higher elevations of southern Labrador Thursday night. Fortunately, the bulk of the rain associated with the low stays offshore as it moves away Friday morning, only brushing parts of northeastern Newfoundland and the Avalon.
Behind the departing low comes cooler air for Friday. Temperatures will struggle across eastern and northeastern Newfoundland, with highs only around 6°C in Bonavista and near 9°C in St. John's. Meanwhile, southwestern sections of the Island will fare much better, reaching the mid-teens in places such as Stephenville and Burgeo.
In fact, some forecast guidance is even hinting at flurries over parts of Central Newfoundland on Friday. Yes, flurries in mid-June.
The weekend looks drier overall, although temperatures will remain below where many would like them to be. Saturday brings a mix of cloud and sunshine, while Sunday currently appears to be the brighter of the two days across much of the Island.
Looking beyond the weekend, there are signs of more showers and rain returning by Tuesday and Wednesday. Labrador will generally remain in the teens through the weekend, with periodic showers but little concern for elevated wildfire risk thanks to the continued cool and damp pattern.
If you're waiting for summer weather to arrive, you're not alone. At this point, it looks like we'll have to be patient a little longer.
