Thunderstorms, Rain, Drizzle and Fog Continue Into Wednesday

If you've been staring out the window at low clouds and fog today, you're certainly not alone. Much of Newfoundland spent Tuesday under a blanket of cloud, drizzle and dense fog as an area of low pressure pushed northward across the province. In some places, visibility was reduced to just a few hundred metres for much of the day, while farther south, the atmosphere became unstable enough to spark thunderstorms.
Those storms first developed over the Burin Peninsula and southwestern Avalon before tracking northward through the afternoon and evening. As the evening continues, the risk shifts toward the Avalon Peninsula, Bonavista Bay and northeastern Newfoundland, where locally heavy rain and a few rumbles of thunder remain possible before activity gradually tapers off overnight.
By Wednesday morning, the worst of the weather will be behind us. Clouds will be stubborn over eastern Newfoundland, but there should be a few brighter breaks, and the dense fog that dominated Tuesday is expected to become much less widespread. That's thanks to drier air working into the region behind the departing low.
The biggest improvements will be found across western and central Newfoundland. Sunshine is expected to return to the west coast, Northern Peninsula and much of central Newfoundland through the day, while the Avalon and northeast coast hang onto more cloud and cooler temperatures. Even so, Wednesday will feel noticeably better than Tuesday.
Labrador has a different story. Another warm day is expected across central and southeastern Labrador, with Goose Bay once again flirting with the 30-degree mark. Heat warnings remain in effect for parts of southeastern Labrador through tonight, although they should come to an end as slightly cooler air begins arriving Wednesday night. Scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms will remain possible across parts of western and central Labrador.
Looking farther ahead, Thursday appears to be the quietest day of the week across Newfoundland, with seasonable temperatures and just a few clouds. Friday brings another area of low pressure toward Atlantic Canada. At this point, it looks like western Newfoundland has the greatest chance of seeing steadier rain, while eastern Newfoundland may once again contend with areas of fog thanks to easterly winds off the Atlantic.
The overall weather pattern doesn't change much heading into the weekend. Expect seasonable temperatures, a mix of sun and cloud, and a few scattered showers. While it won't be a washout, it also doesn't look like we'll see an extended stretch of hot, sunny weather anytime soon.
