Tuesday Morning Weather Briefing — July 28, 2026
Good Tuesday Morning! Here are some highlights on the day(s) ahead:
A Heat Warning remains in effect for central and eastern Labrador until Wednesday for highs near 30ºC and lows in the upper teens.
A cooler pattern has set up shop over much of the Island thanks to broad easterly flow.
We are looking at showers this morning, which become more widespread later today over the eastern 2/3 of the Island as a low moves in from the south.
Areas of dense fog will be common along and near east-facing shores.

Yesterday's record-breaking heat is on its way out for a lot of us, and rain, drizzle and fog are moving in behind it. Cartwright hit 32.8°C yesterday, Churchill Falls got up to 28.8°C, and even Placentia set a record at 22.6°C. That warm air is now departing as the weather pattern has changed to one that is soggier and foggiest, as onshore flow is taking its place across the Avalon, Bonavista and Central/Northeast regions today.
It's a tale of two seteups out there right now. Eastern and northeast Newfoundland are socked in under thick cloud and drizzle with visibility down to just a few kilometres, while the West and Southwest Coasts are milder and drier. There is still heat sitting in Labrador— Happy Valley-Goose Bay was near 18°C early this morning with much drier air— and another hot day is on tap for that area and some locations farther east where a Heat Warning remains in effect. Meanwhile, Labrador West and parts of the coast are a bit cooler.

Eastern Newfoundland and the Avalon: Periods of drizzle turning to rain today, with highs only in the mid-teens and a gusty east wind up to 40 km/h making it feel cooler than that, especially right on the water. The Burin can expect a healthy 10 to 20 mm of rain and drizzle out of this.
Central: Mainly cloudy and rainy for most of the day, highs 14 to 16, with fog patches lifting through the morning before the rain takes over. Not the day for outdoor plans in Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, or up the Northeast Coast.
West Coast: The best of it today — Corner Brook and Stephenville hang onto highs in the low-to-mid 20s under a mix of sun and cloud, with the humidity making it feel a bit sticky in the Humber Valley and Bay of Islands. Enjoy it, because the wetter pattern starts creeping this way later today and into tonight.
South Coast: Rain is the story around Burgeo and the Connaigre today, with a high chance of a soaking — but it clears out nicely behind it, with sun returning by tomorrow.
Southwest and Wreckhouse: A few morning showers around Channel-Port aux Basques today before things dry out and brighten up this afternoon, with highs near 20.
GNP and the Straits: Cloudy and cool by comparison, highs only 14 to 16 around St. Anthony, with showers arriving tonight. Slow to warm up out this way, as usual.

Labrador and the Big Land: This is where the extremes are. Goose Bay is still riding the heat, with highs near 30°C today under partly cloudy skies. Lab West is warm too, in the low 20s, with a chance of showers building later. Up on the North Coast, Nain starts mild but turns wet, with afternoon rain developing and highs near 22 before temperatures fall off sharply behind it over the next couple of days.

Looking ahead, there's a chance drier, warmer air tries to build back in by the weekend, but that's a low-confidence call this far out — the overall pattern is pretty flat and disorganized right now, so I wouldn't lock in any weekend plans just yet. Keep an eye out for fog returning anywhere the wind comes onshore along the Avalon, Burin and South Coast, since that's going to be the recurring theme through this stretch. And for what it's worth, the tropics are completely quiet — nothing brewing out there for at least a week.
