The First Day Of School Forecast Looks Pretty Good! What About The Rest Of The Week?

The storm that brought all the rain and wind over the weekend is finally moving away, but we’re not quite done with unsettled weather yet.
Showers will continue across much of Newfoundland tonight and into early Wednesday, especially on the Avalon Peninsula. Most of those showers should taper off by mid to late morning, although the extreme southern Avalon could stay damp for a bit longer. Once the rain moves out, skies should gradually begin to clear through the afternoon.
Wednesday is also the first day of school for most students across the province, and the weather will vary quite a bit depending on where you are.
Eastern Newfoundland will start off cloudy with a chance of showers, with temperatures around 8°C in the morning and near 12°C by the afternoon. Central Newfoundland will also be cool, while the west coast should turn sunny and reach around 14°C. The Northern Peninsula looks bright but chilly, with temperatures near 5°C early in the day before climbing into the low teens.
Labrador will have an even colder start.
Many inland areas will fall close to, or even below, the freezing mark overnight. Wabush and Labrador City are forecast near 1°C, Churchill Falls and Happy Valley-Goose Bay near 2°C, and some low-lying inland areas could be colder still. Wind chills in Labrador West could briefly feel close to -1°C Wednesday morning.
That colder weather won’t last too long, though. By afternoon, temperatures across much of Labrador should rebound into the middle and upper teens.
The next weather system arrives fairly quickly.
Clouds will increase in Labrador Wednesday afternoon ahead of an approaching low, with rain spreading across much of the Big Land Wednesday night and Thursday. Newfoundland should remain mostly dry through Wednesday, but rain reaches the west coast by Thursday morning and spreads across much of the Island by Thursday evening.
This system will move much faster than the one we just dealt with, so rainfall totals should be lower overall. Still, southern Newfoundland could see another 25 to 50 mm of rain, while many other areas receive around 10 to 20 mm. Labrador is generally looking at 15 to 25 mm, with some pockets potentially reaching 25 to 50 mm.
Wind will also become a factor. Breezy to windy conditions are expected Thursday and Friday, with the possibility of some stronger Wreckhouse winds and potential impacts to Marine Atlantic crossings.
There may even be a little wet snow in the extreme northern Torngats as colder air hangs on there.
By Friday, much of Newfoundland should begin drying out as a secondary low pulls the main area of rain away, although some showers could linger into Saturday. Labrador may stay wetter through Friday.
The weekend currently looks cooler but generally better, especially in Labrador, before warmer temperatures and another chance of showers return early next week.
