Sunshine Expands Friday, But That Doesn’t Mean It Takes Over…

If you spent Thursday wrapped in fog and drizzle across eastern Newfoundland, you probably noticed just how different the weather looked only a few hours west. The reason was simple: wind direction.
A northerly wind off the Atlantic kept eastern and northeastern Newfoundland cool, damp and raw, while western and southern parts of the Island enjoyed sunshine and temperatures pushing into the 20s. If we look farther south, the difference is even more remarkable! Halifax was nearly 20 degrees warmer than St. John's Thursday afternoon! The good news is Friday brings some improvement.
Overnight, areas of fog and drizzle will continue across eastern Newfoundland, but the fog shouldn't be quite as dense as it was during the day. By Friday afternoon, drier air should begin working into the Avalon and Bonavista peninsulas, allowing for some sunny breaks to develop. They may take until after lunchtime to arrive, but I do think many areas will finally see at least some sunshine before the day is over. The best weather, however, will once again be found farther west and south.
Central, western and southern Newfoundland should enjoy plenty of sunshine and temperatures climbing into the upper teens and even the middle 20s. If you're thinking about a road trip, Friday is a great day to head toward the southern Avalon, Cape St. Mary's or Cape Race, where the sunshine should make for some spectacular scenery.
Labrador is also in for another pleasant day. Most of the Big Land will see sunshine and comfortable temperatures, although a few showers are expected across the west overnight and into Friday morning. During the afternoon, a few showers and even isolated thunderstorms could develop across southeastern Labrador, with some activity possibly brushing the Northern Peninsula.
The weekend forecast remains a bit of a mixed bag. Saturday starts on a decent note for much of Newfoundland, but another backdoor cold front is expected to slide southward during the day. That will likely bring another round of cloud, moisture and cooler air into central and eastern Newfoundland, along with the chance of a few showers and perhaps even a thunderstorm north of the south coast Saturday evening.
Sunday doesn't look like a washout, but lingering cloud and a few showers could stick around through part of the day before conditions gradually improve later on.
Looking ahead to next week, temperatures remain close to seasonal values with a modest warming trend Tuesday through Thursday. There are also signs of another unsettled stretch developing during the middle of the week, although it's still too early to pin down the details.
