Thursday Morning’s Weather Briefing — August 6, 2026
Good Thursday Morning! Here are some highlights for the day(s) ahead:
An area of low pressure is swirling just east of the Island this morning; on its back side, northerly winds are keeping things cool, and showers and clouds are widespread along Newfoundland’s north- and east-facing shores from the Avalon to the GNP, along with coastal Labrador. There may be some clearing this afternoon.
Southern and western parts of the Island, along with the rest of Labrador not right on the coast, will see a mix of sun and cloud or just mostly sunny skies today.
There will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms in Labrador West and over interior areas this afternoon.
Highs reach the teens to lower/mid 20s across NL today. Coolest readings found in onshore winds.

Today’s Outlook
A stubborn area of low pressure is currently spinning just east of the Avalon Peninsula. This is driving northerly winds on its back side, along with areas of rain showers and drizzle along and near Newfoundland’s north-facing shores from the Avalon to the Northern Peninsula and even into parts of coastal Labrador. This will be the primary driver of the weather today across a large portion of the Province.
On top of this feature, there will be some scattered shwoers and thunderstorms that develop in western and interior Labrador this aftertnoon. While the storms don’t look to be severe, they will produce locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, frequent thunder and lightning and the potential for small hail. The thunderstorm outlook from Environment Canada highlights this potential.
High temperatures today peak in the teens to near 20º on the Island, with the warmest readings happening in the south and the west. THat is also where the skies will be generally sunny through the day. The nicest weather across Newfoundland today will likely be on the South Coast.
Labrador will also see highs in the teens and 20s today. The cooler readings will be found in the east and southeast and the warmest between Goose Bay and Labrador City.
For those of you wanting some warmer weather, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that it does look to be on the way. The bad news is that we’re going to have to wait a few more days for the warmth to become a bit more widespread.
