Pattern Shift: Dry to Damp

The weather pattern across Newfoundland and Labrador has taken a turn. Gone are the bright, dry days we’ve been enjoying—replaced by cloud cover, drizzle, and fog that will linger through at least the weekend for most areas. Amazingly it still looks like this pattern will not yield significant rainfall.

Daytime temperatures will hover between 8°C and 12°C, while nighttime lows stay just a few degrees cooler. For most of the island, rainfall totals will remain light—just a few millimetres here and there into the weekend. Parts of Labrador will see some rain, 20 mm or more could fall over the next 48 hours, particularly near Makkovik and down the coast toward Cartwright and Rigolet.

Tonight and Thursday

A cloudy, damp night is on tap across the island, with areas of drizzle and fog. Lows will range between 3°C and 6°C, while Labrador West may dip just below freezing.

For Thursday, expect widespread overcast skies with highs of 8ºC to 12°C across most of Newfoundland and 6º to 8°C for central and coastal Labrador. Some wet snow is even possible in the higher terrain near Labrador City early Friday morning.

If any part of the island sees peeks of sunshine, it’ll be the south and southwest coast.

Looking Toward the Weekend

Friday brings little change—more cloud, fog, and light drizzle for much of the island. Temperatures will remain steady near 10ºC, while Labrador’s south coast and Straits stay between 5°C and 8°C.
Interestingly, Labrador West may actually warm up a little over the weekend—unusual for mid-October.

A developing deep low southeast of Nova Scotia late Friday will dominate the North Atlantic through Sunday. It’s a large, powerful system, but for now, most of its guidance keeps the rain offshore. Still, we’ll keep an eye on it in case it drifts a bit farther north and brings wet weather to southeastern Newfoundland.

Summary

  • Persistent drizzle and fog through the weekend

  • Little temperature change: highs near 10°C, lows 3–6°C

  • Heavier rain confined mainly to coastal Labrador

  • Weekend storm likely stays offshore, but watch for updates
