A messy stretch of spring weather is settling across Newfoundland and Labrador tonight and into Thursday as an area of low pressure spins through Labrador. While parts of the Maritimes are seeing near-summer warmth — Halifax climbed close to 30°C this afternoon — we are staying locked into a much cooler pattern with rain, snow, and gusty winds taking centre stage across the province.
Across Labrador tonight, temperatures will drop into the low single digits with rain over southeastern sections and snow developing across western and northern areas. Some of that snow will continue through Thursday, especially along the north coast and portions of the mid coast north of Cartwright. The snow may also briefly make roads slippery overnight between Labrador City and Churchill Falls, where several hours of snowfall are expected along the Trans-Labrador Highway.
Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for communities including Postville, Makkovik, Hopedale, and Nain due to the potential for significant snowfall through Thursday. The heaviest amounts are expected between Hopedale and Nain, where some areas could see well over 20 cm of snow before things finally taper off later Thursday evening.
Meanwhile on the Island, tonight’s rain will gradually move out as conditions improve from west to east on Thursday. Sunshine will return for many areas, but it is going to stay breezy. Winds will ramp up overnight and continue through much of Thursday, with gusts already expected to reach around 70 km/h in some areas of southwestern Newfoundland by Thursday morning. Gusty conditions will continue province-wide into Friday before finally easing later in the day and setting the stage for a calmer weekend.
Rainfall totals across Newfoundland are generally expected to stay in the 5 to 15 mm range, with locally higher amounts possible in the southwest. Southeastern Labrador could pick up 10 to 20 mm of rain. While damp and unsettled, this is not expected to be a major rainfall event and no rainfall warnings are currently anticipated.
Looking ahead, the weekend is shaping up cooler but fairly decent across much of the province. Temperatures will rebound somewhat early next week, but there are still no strong signs of sustained summer warmth arriving anytime soon. Instead, we remain stuck in a classic spring pattern with temperatures bouncing up and down every couple of days depending on the latest passing system.
The next forecast update will be posted bright and early Thursday morning!
