Rain Moves Through Tonight, Then a Brighter Friday and Mild Weekend

Rain has moved into western Newfoundland this afternoon and will continue spreading east across the Island through the evening as an area of low pressure works into the region. The heaviest rain as of mid-afternoon was showing up east of Deer Lake, while some of the precipitation farther east was likely still falling from clouds without reaching the ground.
The system will keep rain going across parts of Newfoundland tonight, while a secondary low develops over Labrador. That will also keep a steadier area of rain going across northern Labrador and parts of Quebec overnight.
By early Friday morning, most of the steadier rain should be pushing east of the Avalon, leaving Newfoundland with more of a scattered shower pattern through the day. The showers will be most persistent across western Newfoundland, while central areas see fewer of them. Eastern Newfoundland should do even better, with some sunshine likely developing by Friday afternoon.
Labrador will stay wetter through Friday, especially along the coast where the rain will last longer and be heavier. Rainfall totals there will generally be in the 15 to 25 mm range, with locally higher amounts possible, particularly inland and over higher terrain.
Across Newfoundland, most areas should stay below 25 mm. The exceptions will be parts of the south coast and the higher terrain of western Newfoundland, where 25 to 50 mm could fall. As is often the case, the hills will squeeze a little more moisture out of the incoming flow than the lower elevations.
Wind will also be part of the story. Newfoundland will see a gusty night, but generally nothing out of the ordinary, with gusts mostly in the 30 to 40 km/h range. The stronger winds will show up along the Labrador coast on Friday, where some areas could see gusts around 70 to 75 km/h.
Those stronger winds will gradually shift southeastward later Friday and into Saturday. Parts of the Northern Peninsula and northeastern Newfoundland could see gusts in the 55 to 65 km/h range on Saturday, but the winds should ease as the day goes on.
Saturday itself does not look too bad. A few showers may linger early, especially over eastern Newfoundland, but the overall trend will be toward improving weather as the low finally moves away.
Temperatures remain fairly mild as well. Newfoundland will generally see mid to upper teens Friday, with some central and eastern areas potentially pushing close to 20°C. After Saturday, the forecast stays mild through much of next week, with upper teens common across the Island.
The next more organized chance of rain for eastern, central and western Newfoundland looks to arrive Monday into Tuesday. Labrador will also see a few opportunities for showers over the weekend and early next week, but temperatures remain seasonable, including a possible high near 22°C in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Sunday.
So, while tonight is wet and Friday starts unsettled, the forecast trends in a better direction heading into the weekend.
