Rain and wind move through this evening, ahead of a nice-looking weekend!
Rain & Wind Continue This Afternoon
An area of low pressure swirling on the eastern side of Hudson Bay is driving our weather this afternoon. It’s bringing widespread rainfall to Newfoundland and Labrador, along with gusty winds that will continue to play a role into this evening.
Wreckhouse wind warning remains in effect until this evening for the Channel-Port aux Basques area, with gusts reported up to 100 km/h.
These winds often funnel into the Codroy Valley and Starlite area before shifting eastward this evening.
By early evening, gusts will spread across eastern Newfoundland — from the Burin Peninsula through the Avalon, Bonavista, and northeast coast.
Bonavista/Burin/Connaigre Peninsula: gusts near 70 km/h
St. John’s metro: 60–70+ km/h between 5 PM and 9 PM
Travelers should keep this in mind, especially through exposed areas.

Friday Night into Saturday
The rain is sliding east quickly. By mid-evening, heavier downpours will focus on the Avalon while conditions improve along the west coast. Coastal Labrador is also picking up some rain, with the Torngats seeing their first significant snowfall of the season.
Overnight, skies begin to clear for much of the island. Rainfall totals:
Most of Newfoundland: 5–15 mm
Southwest coast (Burgio): up to 20–30 mm
Labrador: 5–10 mm of rain, with snow north of Nain
Saturday’s Forecast
Saturday brings a quieter but breezy day across the island.
Temperatures: Mid-to-upper teens for Newfoundland, cooler on Sunday.
Skies: A mix of sun and cloud, with scattered showers possible in a few spots.
Labrador: 8–12°C with a few showers, but overall not a bad day.
Makkovik/North Coast area: Winds gusting 70+ km/h Saturday into the evening, before tapering off overnight.
Looking Ahead
Sunday looks a touch cooler, but still fair overall.
The tropics remain active — I’ll have updates later today and through the weekend.
