Clearing skies, lighter winds, and cool temperatures are setting the stage for a chilly night across much of Newfoundland and Labrador. In fact, Environment Canada has issued Frost Advisories for large portions of Newfoundland, where temperatures could drop as low as -3°C overnight.

The greatest frost risk on the Island will be in inland areas of Central and Western Newfoundland, where winds will be light enough and temperatures cold enough to allow frost to form. Places like Badger and the Deer Lake–Humber Valley area stand out as locations that often end up colder than surrounding regions.

While temperatures on the Avalon and northeast coast will also approach the freezing mark, a persistent breeze should prevent frost from developing in most areas.

Across Labrador, frost will be more widespread, particularly in interior regions and near Goose Bay and the Churchill Valley. While many communities will remain a few degrees above freezing, some sheltered locations will likely dip below 0°C before sunrise.

If you've already planted flowers, vegetables, or other frost-sensitive plants, you'll want to take precautions this evening.

Looking ahead to Saturday, most of Newfoundland will enjoy a mainly dry day. A few showers will move into western Labrador during the morning before spreading toward Labrador West and areas west of Churchill Falls in the afternoon. By evening, some showers may reach portions of the southwest coast of Newfoundland and the South Coast.

Temperatures will remain on the cool side along the coast, especially where winds come off the ocean. Inland areas and western sections of the Province will be noticeably milder.

Sunday looks even better for many areas, with more sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures. However, there may be one downside: bugs.

As winds ease and temperatures rise, conditions will become more favourable for black flies, mosquitoes, and no-see-ums. If you're planning to spend time outdoors, especially in eastern Newfoundland, Saturday may actually be the more comfortable day before the insects become more active Sunday afternoon and evening.

Looking further ahead, temperatures appear likely to moderate through the middle of next week. Central and western Newfoundland have the best chance of seeing warmer weather first, while eastern areas will continue to depend heavily on wind direction. Labrador will remain somewhat unsettled through the next few days before also trending warmer.

For those wondering where summer is hiding, there are at least some encouraging signs that warmer air may arrive around the middle to latter part of next week.
