The weather is improving across most of Newfoundland and Labrador this morning — but not everywhere just yet, and tonight brings a frost advisory for a good chunk of the Island. Let's get into it.

The Avalon: Showers First, Then Clearing

We're still seeing some showers over the Avalon this morning. In the metro area they'll linger for the next couple of hours before beginning to wind down. Behind the showers, it's a cooler and breezy day for central and eastern Newfoundland, with highs around 9º or 10º. Winds will gust close to 60 along parts of the coast.

Skies start cloudy this morning but gradually turn clear by afternoon for most of this area — the clearing arrives latest in the east and northeast.

Central, Western, and Southern Newfoundland: Sunny and Nice

Today is looking generally sunny and nice across central, western, and southern Newfoundland. Highs range from 10º in Central to the middle and upper teens for the West Coast and the Southwest Coast. The Northern Peninsula lands closer to upper single digits to the lower teens.

The Big Land: Sunny Across the Board

Labrador is looking generally sunny and very comfortable today. On the coast, the marine influence keeps things cool — highs of 6º to 8º or 9º — but with the sunshine it won't feel half bad. In the west, also sunny, with highs climbing into the middle to upper teens. Dare I say 20º.

Tonight: Frost Advisory in Effect

A frost advisory has been issued for parts of Central, Southern, and Western Newfoundland for tonight. With clear skies and an unseasonably cold air mass overhead, temperatures are expected to drop to between -3º and 3º — coolest in low-lying areas. If you've got anything tender in the garden, cover it up before bed.

One More Thing: The Bugs

Wind speeds across the board will be lightening up later today and tonight. That means great conditions for being outdoors — and very pleasant conditions for the black flies and mosquitoes. Something to keep in mind if you're camping tonight. Pack the spray.

My next update will be posted later today!
