Multiple Wildfires Burning in Labrador Following Friday's Thunderstorms

Several wildfires continue to burn across Labrador after a significant lightning storm moved through the region on Friday, June 26. According to the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands, none of the fires currently pose a threat to communities.

Fire crews and suppression aircraft remain focused on the wildfire near Miron River, where firefighting efforts continue because of the fire's proximity to the Trans-Labrador Highway and an NL Hydro transmission line.

Meanwhile, the fire at Emerillon Lake South remains under control, with monitoring continuing.

Other fires, including those near Oreway, Shallow Lake, and several fires burning north of Grand Lake, are being monitored but are not currently being actively suppressed. The province says those fires are in remote areas, are a safe distance from communities and other values at risk, and are located near large bodies of water that help reduce the immediate need for suppression efforts.

Smoke Visible Across Parts of Labrador

Residents travelling through parts of Labrador may notice large smoke plumes over the coming days.

Smoke is expected to be visible:

  • Along the Trans-Labrador Highway near the Miron River area.

  • Between Ross Bay Junction and Sept-Îles along the QNS&L Railway corridor.

  • From North West River, Sheshatshiu, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay as smoke from fires north of Grand Lake drifts through the region.

While the smoke may be noticeable, provincial officials emphasize that the fires do not currently threaten any communities.

Current Fire Status

  • Emerillon Lake South: Under Control

  • Miron River: Active suppression efforts underway

  • Oreway: Being monitored

  • Shallow Lake: Being monitored

  • North of Grand Lake: Multiple fires being monitored

The Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands says it will continue to monitor all wildfire activity closely and adjust its response if conditions change.

Residents can stay up to date on active wildfires through the province's wildfire information page.
