Monday Morning’s Weather Briefing — June 8, 2026

Good Monday Morning!

Radar imagery shows where the rain… and snow… is located this morning!

Here are today’s highlights:

  • An area of low pressure is currently over southern Newfoundland, driving showers and rain to its east and more stratoform rain to its north and west.

  • This low slowly pulls into the North Atlantic today, pushing rain toward eastern Newfoundland and bringing it to an end in the central and western parts.

  • Temperatures vary widely around this low. To the east, it’s mild, with readings near 10ºC over roughly the eastern half of Newfoundland, while to the west it’s on the cold side, between 3ºC and 5ºC. There may even be some wet snow in the higher terrain of the Green Bay - White Bay area this morning…

  • Highs will reach the middle to upper teens over eastern Newfoundland today, with the warmest in the Avalon. The Avalon North and Northeast Avalon may even see a bit of sun this morning before the rain arrives in the late afternoon.

  • Labrador gets sunshine and warm temps today

The setup. An area of low pressure is parked over southern Newfoundland this morning. It's producing showers and rain to its east and laying down a broader shield of steadier rain to its north and west. Through today, the low slowly pulls off into the North Atlantic, and that's the key move: the rain gets dragged toward eastern Newfoundland while it tapers and ends across the central and western parts of the Island.

A cold side and a mild side. Temperatures swing significantly from one side of this low to the other. Over roughly the eastern half of the Island, it's mild, with readings near 10ºC or higher. On the cold side, it's between 3º and 5º — raw enough that there may even be some wet snow flying in the higher terrain of the Green Bay - White Bay area this morning. I’ve had enough writing about snow for one season at this point!

Newfoundland Today

Newfoundland’s forecast for today - June 8, 2026

Highs will reach the middle to upper teens across the east today, with the potential to hit 20ºC on the northeast Avalon this afternoon before the rain and cooler air arrive. It will be somewhat cooler just to the west and in areas of onshore flow, where fog will be issued. Eastern (west of the Avalon) and central areas will see periods of rain through much of the day. Temperatures will reach the lower to middle teens before either holding for a while or falling later today. The rain over the eastern half of the Island is expected to be generally light to moderate once it gets going. On the Avalon, expect on-and-off showers this morning and a steadier rain starting this afternoon. Future radar shows this well.

In the Metro area, expect cloudy skies to give way to a mix of sun and cloud for a few hours this morning and into the early afternoon, before clouds return and rain starts around 3 or 4 PM. I’m very confident we will see a high near 20ºC today.

A few select high temperatures over the Avalon today - June 8, 2026

Central and western areas, and the South Coast, see the weather improve today as the low departs. Rain will end this morning on the West Coast and by early afternoon in Central and along most of the South Coast. Highs will reach the mid single digits to the lower teens in most of this area today.

The weather improves on Tuesday.

Labrador Today

Labrador’s forecast for today - June 8, 2026

The forecast for the Big Land is much simpler… expect a mix of sun and cloud, with highs in the upper teens to the mid-20s. It will be cooler along parts of the coast in onshore winds, especially near the Straits. There will be some afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the northwest, mostly over remote areas.
