After a stretch of milder weather, cooler air has settled across Newfoundland today behind a cold front that swept from north to south across the Island. While many areas enjoyed sunshine this afternoon, that cooler air mass is setting the stage for a chilly night and the potential for frost across much of the province.
Temperatures overnight are expected to fall to near freezing across central and eastern Newfoundland, including much of the Avalon Peninsula. The coldest readings are most likely between about 4 and 6 a.m. Saturday. Even if official temperatures stay a degree or two above zero, frost can still develop. Weather observations are taken several feet above the ground, and on clear, calm nights temperatures at ground level can be colder than what appears on your weather app.
That's why a Frost Advisory has been issued for much of Newfoundland.
If you've already started planting flowers, vegetables, or other sensitive plants, tonight is a good night to take precautions. Covering plants, bringing portable pots indoors, watering the soil before sunset, or adding mulch around the base of plants can all help reduce the risk of frost damage.
The good news is that the chilly start won't last long.
Saturday is shaping up to be one of the nicest days we've seen in a while. Sunshine will dominate across Newfoundland, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the teens for many coastal communities and reaching the upper teens or even low 20s across parts of central and western Newfoundland.
Unfortunately, that sunshine won't stick around for long.
Clouds will increase on Sunday as rain spreads into western and southwestern Newfoundland before advancing eastward later in the day. By Sunday night and Monday, much of the Island will be dealing with a slow-moving area of low pressure.
While Monday currently looks cool and wet for many areas, there is still a chance parts of eastern Newfoundland could briefly push toward 20°C if enough sunshine breaks through ahead of the rain.
The bigger story may end up being the rainfall totals.
Current projections suggest widespread rainfall amounts of 25 to 50 mm across large portions of Newfoundland from Sunday through Tuesday. Some areas could see between 50 and 75 mm, particularly from the Bonavista Peninsula westward through central Newfoundland and toward the Bay of Islands region.
The exact location of the heaviest rain will likely shift somewhat over the next couple of days, but confidence is increasing that many areas will receive a substantial soaking.
Meanwhile, Labrador is looking much quieter. Sunshine will dominate through the weekend, with temperatures climbing into the upper teens and low 20s across much of the region. Aside from a few showers possible along the south coast later next week, Labrador's forecast remains relatively uneventful.
For now, keep an eye on those plants tonight, enjoy the sunshine on Saturday, and prepare for a much wetter pattern to settle in early next week.
