After a day of wildly different temperatures across Newfoundland, things are about to settle down tonight — and that will bring a new concern for some areas: frost.
This afternoon was a good example of how varied our weather can be. While St. John's climbed to around 11°C, Gander was sitting near 3°C under much cooler conditions. An area of low pressure moving east of the Island brought rain showers to parts of eastern Newfoundland, while western areas and higher terrain saw periods of rain and even some wet snow.
The good news is that the unsettled weather is winding down.
As the low moves away this evening, skies will gradually clear across much of the Island. By midnight, most of the precipitation will be gone, and overnight the winds will become light. That combination of clear skies and calm conditions will allow temperatures to fall quickly.
Because of that, Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued Frost Advisories for parts of central, western, and interior Newfoundland.
Temperatures in many communities will stay just above freezing, but low-lying areas are likely to dip a little colder. Places like the Exploits Valley, Badger, Deer Lake, and other sheltered inland locations could see patchy frost develop by Tuesday morning. While I don't expect widespread heavy frost, there should be enough cold air around for numerous pockets of frost to form.
If you have gardens, flowers, or sensitive plants, tonight would be a good night to take precautions.
The chill won't last long.
Tuesday is shaping up to be one of the nicest days we've seen in a while. After the cold start, temperatures will rebound into the upper teens and low 20s for many areas, with only communities exposed to onshore winds remaining somewhat cooler.
Labrador is also looking fairly pleasant Tuesday, especially in the west, where temperatures will climb into the upper teens and even the low to mid-20s in some locations.
Looking beyond Tuesday, the forecast continues to show a couple of decent days before cooler weather returns later this week. Long-range guidance suggests temperatures will generally average near to below normal through the next 10 days. That doesn't mean we won't see occasional warm afternoons, but any warmer spells appear likely to be short-lived and surrounded by cooler conditions.
For those hoping summer weather is just around the corner, patience may still be required.
