Is The Labour Day Weekend Forecast Improving?

The Labour Day long weekend forecast is starting to look a little better for parts of Newfoundland, especially compared to what the guidance was suggesting just a day ago.
For the next 24 hours, there is not much going on across the province. A few showers are possible in Labrador, but otherwise Thursday night will be fairly quiet with temperatures falling into the single digits and teens. Friday will bring a little more cloud cover than Thursday, but it should still be a pleasant day across most of Newfoundland with highs in the upper teens to lower 20s.
Labrador is looking even better heading into the weekend. Sunshine should be widespread Saturday and Sunday, with highs generally in the upper teens to around 20°C. Coastal areas will be cooler, but overall the Big Land is shaping up for a pretty decent long weekend.
The forecast across Newfoundland is more complicated, but there has been some improvement.
An area of low pressure will move out of the Maritimes with a large amount of moisture wrapped up in it. Parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island could see more than 75 mm of rain before the weekend is over, and some areas may even exceed 100 mm.
For Newfoundland, the key feature is a strong area of high pressure over Labrador. Right now, that high looks like it may be strong enough to keep the bulk of the heaviest rain just offshore of southern and southeastern Newfoundland.
That is an important change from what some earlier forecasts were suggesting.
Rain will still try to push northward through Saturday as the low slowly lifts toward Newfoundland, and showers are likely in parts of the Island. But as things stand now, rainfall totals are more likely to be in the 25 to 50 mm range at most.
There is still plenty of uncertainty here. It would not take much of a shift in the position or strength of the high over Labrador to allow the heavier rain offshore to move farther north and onto the Island.
So while the forecast is looking somewhat better, this is not a case where the weekend is suddenly guaranteed to be dry.
Temperatures across Newfoundland will generally fall back into the teens after Friday, with a somewhat unsettled weekend ahead. Conditions should begin improving again once we get past Monday.
The bottom line is that the Labour Day weekend forecast has trended in a better direction for southern and eastern Newfoundland, but rain remains in the picture and the exact northern extent of the heavier rainfall is still something to watch closely.
