The Weather Across NL Gets A Bit More Active For The Weekend

After a relatively quiet Friday, things are about to get much more active across Newfoundland and Labrador. Snow is already beginning to move into Labrador West, while rain is on approach for the island. This is the first of two rounds of weekend weather that will bring a mix of rain, snow, wind, and—eventually—some sunshine before we wrap the weekend up.

Round One: Friday Night into Saturday

Labrador:
Snow has begun in Western Labrador. Through the night, the snow becomes more widespread, especially in the southeast, with flurries tapering in the west by Saturday afternoon. Most areas will pick up 2–5 cm, with 5–10 cm for parts of the Churchill Valley.

Newfoundland:
Rain spreads north from the south coast later this evening, reaching central and eastern areas overnight. Some places in central may briefly start as wet snow before changing to rain.

  • Northern Peninsula: A few cm of snow are possible—mainly over higher terrain—while lower elevations may remain mixed.

  • Higher hilltops across western NL could see 5–15 cm, with most snow on the front end before changing over.

By Saturday afternoon the island’s rain tapers to showers, ending the first round.

Temperatures Saturday range from 3–7°C on the island, slightly above freezing on the Avalon, and well below freezing across Labrador.

Round Two: Late Saturday Night into Sunday

This one isn’t a powerhouse, but it will have more punch—especially for eastern Newfoundland—thanks to rain and a decent shot of wind.

By early Sunday morning, rain falls on the Avalon with winds gusting 60–80 km/h. A rain–snow boundary sets up somewhere west of New-Wes-Valley through the Burin Peninsula and Fortune Bay. West of that line, parts of central and western Newfoundland may see a quick hit of accumulating snow Sunday morning. It’s short-lived: by noon, most of it’s gone.

Snow totals:

  • Generally 2–5 cm, mostly inland and over higher terrain.

  • Coastal areas may see only a trace.

  • Classic “Gander special” setup—just enough to whiten things for a few hours.

Rainfall totals:

  • Eastern Newfoundland picks up 10–15 mm from late Saturday night into mid-morning Sunday.

By Sunday afternoon, skies clear and the day could actually finish quite nicely with sunshine for many parts of the island. Highs range from 6–8°C in the east, slightly cooler west, and near –3 to 0°C in Labrador.

Looking Ahead to Early Next Week

Monday brings highs near 3–4°C for much of Newfoundland, with temperatures dipping slightly Tuesday. There’s a chance of rain or wet snow for the Avalon on Tuesday depending on how close an offshore low tracks. If it stays offshore, impacts will be limited; if it nudges closer, expect a bit of precipitation.

I’ll keep an eye on it and update through the weekend.

I’ll have my next update posted over the weekend.
