Rain arrives in southwest Newfoundland later today and quickly spreads east this afternoon and evening.

Newfoundland & Labrador Today
The day is starting off dry across the Island ahead of the incoming storm. Rain will arrive on the southwest coast this afternoon and quickly spread eastward, reaching most areas by evening. The rain will be heavy at times once it starts.
In the east, the cloudy, dry morning will give way to lower clouds and the possibility of drizzle and fog along and near east-facing shores by early afternoon.
High temperatures today peak in the lower to mid-teens before the rain starts. Once the rain starts, the mercury will drop to the lower teens.
The expected high winds will hold off until tonight or Saturday morning. While wind warnings are currently in effect from the Northern Peninsula east to Avalon North (see earlier post), they may need to be expanded to encompass parts of the West Coast/GNP for tonight.
Labrador will see a mix of sun and cloud east of Churchill Falls today, while in the west, the low-pressure system that will drive tonight's and tomorrow's rain and wind on the island will bring rain and wet snow to eastern Quebec and Labrador West through much of today. Light accumulations on unpaved surfaces are possible. Up to 5 cm may fall in the higher terrain of eastern Quebec.
Late Week Storm Update (Later Today into Saturday)
Forecasts continue to indicate an area of low pressure will rapidly develop as it moves across Newfoundland betwen tonight and Saturday afternoon. This will drive rain today and tomorrow across most of Newfoundland, with the heaviest being on the Northern Peninsula, where 50 mm (or more) is possible.
The bigger concern with this low will be the high winds that will be felt across much of Newfoundland between late tonight and Saturday. Gusts will be over 70 km/h for the entire Island. Areas from the Northern Peninsula to the Avalon will see gusts over 90 km/h, with some locations along the northeast coast seeing gusts as high as 110 km/h. Due to the trees having leaves and the ground being soft, tree damage and utility outages are likely to occur in areas that see the highest wind speeds.
