Friday Morning’s Weather Briefing — October 2, 2026
Good Friday Morning! Here are today’s highlights
A cold front is draped across Labrador this morning and is running from near Makkovik, southwestward into Quebec. Behind the front, temperatures are in the single digits; east of it, the teens.
There are showers along and ahead of the front in the Big Land this morning.
Newfoundland will be mild and breezy and generally partly cloudy today, with areas of fog to the south. Showers arrive on the West Coast late today, and rain moves across much of the Island tonight.
Rain will cover eastern areas until mid-morning Saturday; after that, a sunny, fall-like day will prevail across most of NL.
This morning’s update is sponsored by Roebothan, McKay, Marshall.

A cold front is draped across Labrador this morning and is running from near Makkovik, southwestward into Quebec. Behind the front, temperatures are in the single digits; east of it, the teens. Along and near the front, we are seeing rain showers, which are being reported in Goose Bay and Wabush and spotted on various webcams around the Big Land. Behind the front, temperatures are in the single digits, and the wind is from the west; ahead of the front, temperatures are in the teens, and the wind is from the southwest.
As the front moves southeastward today, the showers along it will get pushed toward the Straits, and clearing skies and falling temperatures will become the rule. The animation below shows how the temperatures will fall as the colder air filters in behind the cold front.
Meanwhile, south of the front, the weather across Newfoundland today will be mild and breezy, and even a touch humid, with highs reaching the mid-teens to near 20ºC this afternoon. While this may not be the last 20º day of the year… it very well could be. Wind speeds will gust to 50-60 km/h today from the southwest.
What the temperature map above doesn’t show is that we will see showers move into western areas this afternoon, along with fog and drizzle on the south coast and southern-facing shores today. Futurecast paints that picture nicely. It also shows rain moving through tonight along the cold front, in conjunction with a developing low-pressure area. The showers associated with the two will linger into Saturday morning or early afternoon before the front clears the East Coast, the clouds part, and the sun returns for Saturday. Areas west of the East Coast will see the sun earlier on Saturday; in fact, the West Coast looks sunny for most of the day.
Rainfall amounts don’t look overly significant, but some areas will pick up a quick 15 to 30 mm overnight from near southwestern Newfoundland to near Botwood/Twillingate. The map below shows where the heaviest rainfall is expected.
Once past Saturday morning, the weekend looks pretty good (but fall-like), and I’ll have a forecast update for you later today.
