Thursday brought an unusually warm start to October across much of Newfoundland and Labrador, but a significant change is on the way.
Temperatures climbed especially high across parts of Labrador, with unofficial record highs reported in places including Nain, Hopedale, Wabush and Makkovik. For parts of Labrador, Thursday may very well have been one of the final days of the year with temperatures near or above 20°C. A cold front is now moving south across the province, and behind it will come a much cooler air mass that will eventually spread across Newfoundland as well.
Friday: Still Mild for Newfoundland
Friday will remain relatively mild across much of Newfoundland. Temperatures will generally reach the mid-teens, with some areas approaching 20°C once again. It will remain breezy, with showers developing along the west coast later in the day. Areas along and near south-facing shores may also see some fog and drizzle.
Meanwhile, the change will already be underway across Labrador. Northern and western Labrador will turn noticeably cooler, while southeastern Labrador remains milder early in the day. In fact, some of Friday's highest temperatures in southeastern Labrador may occur during the morning before the cold front passes. Rain will also move through parts of southeastern Labrador as the front tracks south.
Rain Moves Across Newfoundland Friday Night
By Friday evening, showers will begin arriving along Newfoundland's west coast as the cold front approaches. At the same time, an area of low pressure is expected to develop in the Gulf and track across Newfoundland Friday night into Saturday morning. That will help pull the cold front across the Island and bring an area of rain eastward overnight. Showers should reach the Avalon Peninsula early Saturday morning before gradually winding down.
A Much More Fall-Like Weekend
Behind the front, skies should begin clearing across parts of the Island Saturday afternoon, but temperatures will feel much more typical of October. Daytime highs this weekend will generally be in the lower to mid-teens across Newfoundland.
The bigger change may be noticeable overnight, with temperatures Saturday night and Sunday night dropping into the single digits in many areas. Across Labrador, the cold front will clear the province by late Friday, setting the stage for a considerably cooler weekend, especially in the north and west. Temperatures in western Labrador will struggle to get out of the single digits at times over the coming days. There may even be periods of rain and snow showers or flurries in parts of Labrador next week.
October Weather Arrives
Newfoundland will also trend cooler heading into early next week, particularly across eastern areas. Monday and Tuesday will feature temperatures generally in the lower to mid-teens along with another chance of showers. After a relatively mild September, the overall pattern is beginning to look much more like October. And while widespread snow isn't in the forecast for Newfoundland just yet, the first flurries of the season will become increasingly possible as we move deeper into the month.
I'll continue watching the changing pattern closely.
