Rain is moving into western Newfoundland this afternoon, and that will be the start of a fairly quick change in the weather heading into Saturday.

A cold front is dropping southeast across the province, and a small area of low pressure will develop along it tonight. That will help produce a band of rain, heavy at times, from southwestern Newfoundland through parts of central and northeastern Newfoundland overnight. By around midnight, the steadier rain should stretch from the southwest toward areas near Lumsden, then shift east through the early morning hours.

The Avalon will be among the last areas to see the rain. It should remain relatively mild and mostly dry there through much of the night before rain moves in Saturday morning. The good news is that it will not last long. The rain should move offshore during the afternoon, followed by clearing skies working from west to east.

Rainfall totals generally look manageable. Around 10 to 20 mm is expected from the Port aux Basques area through parts of central Newfoundland and toward Gander and Bonavista Bay. Areas farther northwest and southeast should see lower amounts. 100226 CAPTIONS

Saturday itself will improve as the day goes on. Western Newfoundland should see sunshine fairly early, while eastern areas — especially the Avalon — will have to wait until later in the day for the skies to clear. Highs will generally reach the middle teens, with a few spots possibly getting to 16°C or 17°C before the cooler air becomes more established. And that cooler air is the bigger story for the weekend.

Labrador has already felt the change, with temperatures much lower than Newfoundland Friday afternoon. The colder air continues south this weekend, and it will be cold enough for a few flurries in northern Labrador and parts of Quebec Saturday afternoon. 100226 CAPTIONS

Sunday will be cooler across Newfoundland, and that cooler pattern looks like it will stick around through much of next week. There will be opportunities for showers or rain at times, but the main takeaway is that the stretch of unusually mild late-September weather is coming to an end.

Labrador stays chilly as well. Saturday highs will generally range from 7°C to 13°C, with temperatures in Labrador West only reaching around 5°C to 8°C Monday and Tuesday. Overnight lows there will also be near freezing.

It will also be a little breezy tonight and Saturday, with gusts of 50 to 60 km/h possible in a few areas. Nothing severe is expected, but you’ll notice the wind along with the cooler temperatures.

So, enjoy the remaining warmth Friday evening. Rain crosses Newfoundland tonight and Saturday morning, conditions improve behind it, and then the weather starts feeling much more like October.
