Good Friday morning!

Here are today’s highlights:

  • A slow-moving weather-maker will bring rain to Newfoundland through much of the day. It will be heavy at times in the south and east.

  • The rain will end this evening or tonight for most areas. The Northern Peninsula and southeast Labrador may see a switch to wet snow before the rain ends overnight or Saturday morning (Labrador).

  • The weather improves behind this system, setting us up for a sunny Saturday. Rain and wet snow will return to Labrador Sunday afternoon… both days looks good for the Island!

This Morning

Newfoundland's forecast for May 8, 2026

Rain is already widespread across the island this morning, with the heaviest bands setting up across the south coast, Burin and the Avalon Peninsula. Expect a steady rain through much of the day across a large portion of the Island — this system isn't in any hurry. Temperatures are sitting in the +5º to +10º range for most areas. On the back side of this system, it’s cooler (in Labrador) where readings are hovering closer to the freezing mark.

Visibility will be reduced in fog along the coastlines, especially on the Burin and Avalon and South Coast. If you're heading out the door, give yourself a few extra minutes — roads are wet, and the spray on the highways will be heavy.

This Afternoon

The rain doesn't let up. In fact, the heaviest totals are likely to pile up through the afternoon across the southeast — the Avalon, Burin, and Bonavista peninsulas could see 25 to 40 mm by the time things wind down, with isolated higher amounts possible where the bands stall out. A rainfall warning may be needed for parts of eastern Newfoundland before the day is out.

The Rainfall forecast from this morning at 6 AM until 12 AM Saturday.

Winds will be brisk too, easterly at 30 to 50 km/h along exposed coasts, gusting higher on the Avalon. Inland, it's a quieter, grayer kind of wet afternoon. Highs will reach the lower teens over the island, and temperatures across Labrador will hold in the single digits with improving weather for most areas.

A very slim portion of the southwest and west coast may see some sunshine late this afternoon… I’ll watch the satellite closely.

Labrador’s forecast for today, May 8, 2026.

Tonight

The slow-moving system finally starts to pull away this evening, and the rain will taper from west to east overnight. Most of us on the island should be drying out by early Saturday morning.

It's a different story farther north. As colder air filters in behind the low, the Northern Peninsula and southeast Labrador will likely see the rain change over to wet snow before it ends. Across the Great Northern Peninsula, don't expect much in the way of accumulation — just a brief change-over before the precipitation tapers. Southeast Labrador is a different story, with a slushy 2 to 5 cm possible overnight into Saturday morning. Watch for slick spots on untreated surfaces by sunrise.

Overnight lows: around +2º to +4º on the island, dipping to -5º to +1 °C across Labrador.

The Weekend

Here's where the forecast gets a lot friendlier. Saturday is shaping up to be a beauty across the island. High pressure builds in behind the departing low, skies clear out, and most communities should see plenty of sunshine. Highs will climb into the low to mid teens in many spots — a welcome change after a soggy Friday. It's a great day to get outside, dry out the gear, and enjoy spring the way it's supposed to feel. Labrador will also see the sun over most of the weekend, with highs both days into the single digits above freezing. The next weather-maker will spread showers into the region Sunday afternoon.

I’ll have a full forecast posted later today!
