A PROVINCE WIDE FIRE BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL JULY 17 ....

Good Friday Morning! Here are some highlights on the day(s) ahead:

  • The fog over eastern/southern Newfoundland should clear this morning — except along the southern coast. May hang tough there through much of the day.

  • Expect a mix of sun and cloud across most of Newfoundland and Labrador today, at least to start. Highs reach the mid-teens to the mid-20s.

  • Showers and rain arrive in southwest Newfoundland later this morning or early afternoon and move northeast, reaching central and northeastern areas very late this afternoon or this evening.

  • There will be some isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms in Labrador, mostly in the southeast.

TODAY’S FORECAST

On the Avalon, expect partly to mostly cloudy skies today, after the fog burns off, with highs in the low-to-mid 20s. Showers hold off until this evening, so most of the day should stay dry — just watch for lingering fog patches, especially along the Southern Shore and other east-facing coastlines.

Central sees the warmest air of the day, with highs climbing into the mid-20s under mostly cloudy skies. This is also where the best chance of showers sits today, arriving through the afternoon and continuing into the evening.

On the West Coast, expect low 20s and only a chance of afternoon showers, while Stephenville/BSG trend a bit cooler and see showers arrive a little earlier in the day. On the southwest coast, expect clouds, showers, drizzle, fog and areas of rain arriving by afternoon. Highs reach the middle teens.

The South Coast, from Burgeo through Connaigre, stays cloudy with rain building in by late day and highs only in the mid-teens — one of the cooler spots on the Island today. There will also be areas of fog.

The Northern Peninsula and the Straits stay cloudy and hold in the high teens, without any organized rain expected today — just general cloud cover.

Labrador is a mixed bag. The Big Land runs coolest on the North Coast, where Nain sits in the low teens with a chance of showers and a brisk wind. Inland and toward Lab West, expect mostly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-teens. The warmest spot in the whole Province today is actually Central Labrador — Happy Valley-Goose Bay climbs into the low-to-mid 20s with just a chance of afternoon showers.

Looking ahead, Saturday brings some improvement across most of the Province. Central and the Avalon should see mainly a lingering afternoon shower chance rather than a washout, and the West Coast trends toward gradual clearing. If you've got outdoor plans this weekend, Saturday afternoon into Sunday is shaping up to be the better window.
