A Somewhat Cooler And More Active Weather Pattern Moves In

What a difference 24 hours can make.

After temperatures soared into the upper 20s and even low 30s earlier this week, much of Newfoundland and Labrador cooled off by 5 to more than 10 degrees on Thursday as a cold front swept across the province. It wasn't exactly cold, but it certainly felt more comfortable.

Now that the heat has moved on, the focus shifts to two things: air quality in Labrador and an unsettled weekend forecast.

Smoke from the numerous wildfires burning across Labrador continues to affect air quality, although the worst conditions aren't necessarily where you might expect. While fires continue to burn near Labrador West, the poorest air quality Thursday was actually found along the Labrador coast, where smoke settled near the surface.

The encouraging news is that air quality has gradually improved in several communities throughout the day, and hopefully that trend continues into Friday as winds shift and some showers move through the region.

Speaking of showers, a few will linger over eastern Newfoundland and southeastern Labrador tonight before tapering off by Friday morning.

Friday won't be a washout, but it won't be wall-to-wall sunshine either.

Clouds will be common, and while many areas will stay dry for much of the day, scattered showers are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening as another disturbance approaches from the southwest. While an isolated rumble of thunder can't be ruled out, most communities will simply see periods of rain or showers.

Temperatures remain pleasant, with highs generally reaching the low to mid-20s across central and western Newfoundland, while eastern areas stay a little cooler thanks to onshore winds. Fog and drizzle will also be possible along parts of the south and east coasts.

The weekend forecast is a little tricky.

Saturday isn't shaping up to be a complete washout, but it's also not a guaranteed dry day. Instead, expect scattered, hit-and-miss showers across much of Newfoundland and Labrador. Some communities may stay dry all day, while others pick up a few passing showers.

That uncertainty makes planning outdoor activities a little difficult. If you're attending the Hickman Chevrolet Car Show or another outdoor event, chances are you'll get some dry weather, but it would still be wise to keep an eye on the sky.

Sunday looks cooler, especially across eastern Newfoundland, where highs will struggle compared to earlier this week. The trade-off is that many areas should see fewer showers as drier air gradually works in.

Looking ahead to next week, temperatures recover into the low 20s for many communities, but there's no sign of another major heat wave just yet.

For now, the cooler temperatures, occasional showers and lighter winds are all welcome news for wildfire crews working across Labrador. With a province-wide fire ban remaining in effect until July 17, it's still important that everyone does their part to prevent new fires.
