A PROVINCE WIDE FIRE BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL JULY 17 ....

Good Thursday Morning! Here are some highlights on the day(s) ahead:

  • Temperatures will not be as hot across the Province today, and most areas will 5º to 10º cooler, on average, compared to yesterday. The exception will be in onshore winds, where it will largely be the same.

  • Highs reach the lower to middle 20s over much of the NL (cooler in onshore southerlies).

  • We are seeing some areas of fog this morning, particularly in the south.

  • Showers march through southeast Labrador this morning and work onto the GNP this afternoon.

  • An area of low pressure will push rain and showers onto the Avalon this afternoon.

  • Scattered showers and thunderstorms return to Newfoundland Friday afternoon.

Smoke In The Atmosphere

Computer models are doing a reasonably good job of detecting where smoke is in the atmosphere over the region. Most areas of NL are seeing it this morning; however, it’s most dense in Labrador, where the fires are burning. It’s also impacting air quality in much of the Big Land. Air Quality Alerts are in effect and will remain in effect until at least this evening.

This smoke is leading to red sunrises and sunsets across Atlantic Canada. This is due to the smoke’s ability to absorb shorter wavelengths. Red and orange are longer wavelengths in the light spectrum, and that’s why what we see is a red sunrise or sunset when the sun is shining through the smoke aloft.

Newfoundland’s Forecast

Temperatures will not be as hot across the Island today. Most areas will run 5º to 10º cooler, on average, compared to yesterday. The exception will be in onshore winds, where it will largely be the same. Highs reach the lower to middle 20s over much of the Island — the mid 20s in Central and low 20s on the West Coast — while onshore southerlies hold much of the Avalon and south coast in the mid teens to near 20º. There will also be areas of fog south today.

An area of low pressure will push rain and showers onto the Avalon this afternoon, with fog patches thickening as the southeasterly winds pick up, gusting to 40 km/h. Amounts stay light, and showers taper this evening. Showers also work onto the GNP this afternoon.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms return to Newfoundland Friday afternoon. Ahead of them, Friday turns warm again, with highs in the mid 20s for Central and even the northeast Avalon, and humidex values pushing toward 29º.

Labrador’s Forecast

Showers march through southeast Labrador this morning before pushing across the Strait to the Northern Peninsula this afternoon. It'll be breezy with it — southwest winds at 30, gusting to 50 along the coast — but still mild, with highs in the low 20s.
