Friday Morning’s Weather Briefing — July 31, 2026
Good Friday Morning! Here are some highlights on the day(s) ahead:
We are waking to areas of dense fog in parts of eastern and northeast Newfoundland, particularly along and near east-facing shorelines. Visibility at YYT is hovering near 200 metres this morning; however, most flights appear to be on time thus far!
Radar shows an area of rain moving north of Connaigre and heading north toward Central/Northeastern Newfoundland at this hour, along with some thunderstorms just off the southwest coast (scroll down to see the loop).
Scattered showers and possible thunderstorms will be the rule throughout the day over much of Newfoundland, with more isolated pop-up showers in the Big Land. Expect cloudy and foggy (fog is east + northeast) conditions on the Island and generally nicer weather in Labrador.
Highs reach the teens to near 20ºC on the Island today and teens and 20s in Labrador
This morning’s update is sponsored by Roebothan, McKay, Marshall.

Today’s Outlook
An area of low pressure currently swirling over Nova Scotia will slowly meander toward Newfoundland today. Ahead of that low, a broad easterly/northeast flow has taken hold. This has driven the fog into eastern and northeastern areas, and that’s where it will stay through the day. Ahead of the low, there are scattered showers, pockets of rain and even thunderstorms moving northwards. Those will be found across much of southern and southwestern Newfoundland today. Labrador, on the other hand, remains largely unaffected by this pattern, except in the southeast, and will see sunshine today and comfortable temperatures, along with some pop-up showers this afternoon.
Newfoundland Today
Cloudy skies will be the rule rather than the exception across Newfoundland today. There will be areas of showers and even some rain, along with a risk of thunderstorms in the southwest and south throughout the day. Eastern and northeastern areas will remain foggy today near and along the shorelines. The fog in some areas will be quite dense. Remember to turn those headlights on if you find yourself in the dense fog! Highs reach the teens to near 20ºC today. Winds from the east at about 10 to 20 km/h
Labrador Today
Areas of fog and low cloud in the southeast; otherwise, it’s a mix of suna nd cloud today, with highs in the upper teens to mid-20s. There will be some scattered showers and thunderstorms that pop up this afternoon, mainly over interior and western areas. A much easier forecast than for Newfoundland!
The Weekend Outlook
Saturday will be very similar to today across the island, with more showers and possible thunderstorms. The fog will remain entrenched along and near the east-facing shores. Labrador will see a bit more shower and thunderstorm activity as a system approaches from the west. I’ll have a full update on the weekend forecast later today!
My next update will be posted later today!
