Another round of wintry weather arrives in Newfoundland Friday afternoon

Today certainly didn’t feel like early April across Newfoundland and Labrador… and there’s a reason for that.

Highs struggled across the board, including just –4°C in St. John’s, making it the coldest April 2nd on record at St. John’s International Airport. Records here go all the way back to 1874, and the previous record low-high was –3.3°C, set multiple times in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

So yes — this kind of cold this late in the season is genuinely unusual.

Labrador stayed cold as well, with highs near –10°C, although that’s actually a bit of an improvement compared to earlier this week.

The next system moves in Friday afternoon, bringing snow across Newfoundland that will continue through Friday night and into Saturday, ending from west to east during the day.

Environment Canada has already issued:

  • A snowfall warning for the Channel–Port aux Basques area

  • A special weather statement from Burgeo through the Avalon Peninsula

Most areas in southern and eastern Newfoundland are looking at 10 to 20 cm of snow, but there’s a catch…

Timing Breakdown

  • Friday morning: Quiet across the province

  • Friday afternoon: Snow begins in the southwest

  • Friday night: Snow spreads across all of Newfoundland

  • Saturday morning: Widespread snow, potentially heavy at times in eastern areas

  • Saturday afternoon: Snow ends west → east

If you have travel plans Saturday morning — especially flying out of St. John’s — expect possible disruptions.

Wind + Snow Saturday

On top of the snowfall, winds will increase:

  • Gusts of 60–70 km/h at times

That could lead to reduced visibility during heavier bursts Saturday morning.

Sunday Break… Then Another System

Sunday starts quiet across the Island, but it won’t stay that way.

Another system arrives:

  • Sunday night into Monday

  • Brings snow to Labrador

  • Brings a mix (snow → ice → rain) to parts of Newfoundland

Monday also features a brief warm-up on the Island, with highs climbing above freezing in some areas before things settle down again midweek.

Final Thoughts

This is a classic early April pattern for Newfoundland — winter trying to hang on just a little longer.

  • Record cold behind us

  • Snow on the way to close out the week

  • Another system early next week

I’ll continue tracking this closely and updating you through the app and across social through the weekend.
