Another round of snow moves in today, Snowfall Warnings, Special Weather Statements in effect

Winter weather alerts as of Friday morning, April 3, 2026.

Another area of low pressure will pass south of Newfoundland between tonight and Saturday afternoon. The track of this low, combined with cold air in place, will lead to more snowfall over much of Newfoundland. Snow will arrive this afternoon in the southwest, then spread eastward overnight. Snow will end from west to east on Saturday; however, on the Avalon, it will not stop until the afternoon. Environment Canada has issued Snowfall Warnings and a Special Weather Statement ahead of the approaching weather.

SNOWFALL WARNING

Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Level Snowfall Warning for parts of eastern Newfoundland, including the Avalon Peninsula and Burin Peninsula, where accumulating snow is expected to create moderate impacts through Saturday. The following areas are under this alert:

  • Avalon Peninsula North

  • Avalon Peninsula Southeast

  • St. John’s and vicinity

  • Avalon Peninsula Southwest

  • Burin Peninsula

The What:

Environment Canada is calling for total snowfall amounts of 15 to 20 cm across the region. Snow is expected to begin tonight and continue through Saturday morning, before tapering off by Saturday afternoon.

Timing and Impacts

With steady snowfall through the period, travel conditions will deteriorate at times. Roads and walkways are expected to become snow-covered and difficult to navigate, especially during periods of heavier snow.

If you’re heading out, plan for extra time and be prepared for reduced visibility and slippery conditions.

What This Means

Environment Canada issues snowfall warnings when significant impacts are expected due to snowfall accumulations. In this case, the combination of 15–20 cm of snow and steady timing through the day Saturday will be enough to affect travel and day-to-day activities across eastern Newfoundland.

Special Weather Statement

Environment Canada has continued the Special Weather Statement for the following areas:

  • Connaigre

  • Burgeo – Ramea

The What:

Environment Canada is forecasting 10 to 15 cm of snowfall, with the potential for locally higher amounts in some areas. Snow is expected to begin late this afternoon or this evening and continue through the night, before tapering off by around noon on Saturday.

Timing and Impacts

As snow develops and accumulates, travel conditions will deteriorate, particularly overnight and into Saturday morning.

If you’re planning to travel in these areas, it’s a good idea to stay flexible.

  • Consider modifying travel plans if possible

  • If travel is necessary, allow extra time to reach your destination

Something of Note…

While this is not currently at warning criteria, snowfall amounts in the 10–15 cm range — especially with locally higher totals — will still be enough to create noticeable impacts, particularly on untreated roads and during periods of steady snow.

Snow will also fall outside the alert areas; however, amounts will be below the criteria for any weather alert.
