Another Low Arrives Thursday, Brings Rain, Wind And Warmer Temps

A chilly night is ahead for parts of central and western Newfoundland, while another area of low pressure gets ready to bring rain and gusty winds to much of the province on Thursday.
Temperatures will fall close to the freezing mark in a few inland areas of central and western Newfoundland overnight, while most other areas stay noticeably milder. In Labrador, the bigger story will be rain spreading into the west and north overnight as low pressure moves east from Hudson Bay through Quebec.
By Thursday morning, much of Labrador will be dealing with rain and showers, some of which could be heavy in the southwest. Winds will also increase, with gusts generally in the 50 to 60 km/h range and potentially a little higher in some areas.
Newfoundland will start Thursday on a much quieter note. Central and eastern areas should remain dry and sunny through much of the day, while rain begins moving into western and southwestern Newfoundland and the Northern Peninsula by late morning or early afternoon. From there, the rain will spread east through the afternoon and evening. Some of the heavier rainfall is expected over higher terrain just inland from the south coast.
Wind will also become a factor across the Island. Most areas can expect gusts of 50 to 60 km/h from the south or south-southeast, while the Wreckhouse area could see gusts approaching 100 km/h during the afternoon. Anyone travelling through that area should keep a close eye on conditions and any warnings that may be issued.
This will not be a repeat of the system that brought heavy rain to the province last weekend. That storm had a much deeper supply of subtropical moisture to work with. This one is moving faster and simply does not have the same amount of moisture available. Rainfall totals across most of Newfoundland should therefore be much more manageable. Many areas are expected to receive around 5 to 15 mm, with some spots reaching 20 mm. The west coast and higher terrain of southern Newfoundland could see 25 to 50 mm, while amounts along parts of the south coast are more likely to fall in the 15 to 25 mm range.
Labrador will generally see 15 to 25 mm, with locally higher totals possible in a few areas. The system slows somewhat heading into Friday as the original low transfers its energy to a secondary low. That will keep the weather unsettled, but Friday should still be an improvement for much of Newfoundland. Expect scattered showers, some sunny breaks and another breezy day, with the most persistent showers likely across western Newfoundland and coastal Labrador.
After that, the weekend is looking considerably better. Saturday will be on the cooler side, but right now the forecast looks pretty decent across most of Newfoundland and Labrador. Temperatures remain seasonable through the weekend, with no major signs of an early plunge into fall just yet.
