A Brief Reprieve This Weekend

It will be quiet and cool across much of NL tonight… and not as windy!

On the Island, Saturday starts off quietly. Rain will arrive for southern and eastern areas in the afternoon, while western Newfoundland enjoys a mostly dry day with only a slight chance of late-day showers.

By Sunday, eastern Labrador will see highs near 1–3°C, while western areas remain colder, around -4°C. On the Island, showers early on the Avalon will taper off, and the weather should gradually improve through the second half of the day.

Rain arriving late Saturday will linger into early Sunday, bringing 15–25 mm across parts of Newfoundland — a welcome dose of moisture for areas that have been dry in recent weeks. Light snow will develop over western Labrador, with a couple of centimeters possible around Wabush and areas west of Happy Valley–Goose Bay.

Looking Ahead: A Significant System Early Next Week

Our next major weather maker arrives late Monday into Wednesday. An area of low pressure will form near Boston on Monday and move northward, bringing a mix of rain and snow to Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • Monday evening: Snow develops across western Labrador while rain spreads into the Maritimes.

  • Early Tuesday: Heavy rain overspreads most of Newfoundland, with snow and ice for parts of Labrador.

  • Tuesday evening: Rain continues across the province, heaviest along southern and southeastern Newfoundland, while rain and milder air push into Labrador.

  • Wednesday morning: Rain persists in some eastern areas before tapering off later in the day.

This system will be a rainmaker for Newfoundland and a snow-to-rain event for western Labrador.

Rainfall and Snowfall Potential

Forecast guidance shows a 90–100% chance of more than 50 mm of rain between Monday and Wednesday along Newfoundland’s southern-facing shorelines.
Some locations could even see up to 100 mm (4 inches) — a sign of a very wet couple of days ahead.

For Labrador, the probability of 15+ cm of snow is in the 60–80% range, mainly across the west. That means it’ll likely be a messy mix of snow, ice, and rain before milder air moves in midweek.
