Winter Storm Departs And Calmer Weather Takes Hold… For One Day

Many areas across the St. John’s metro picked up 20 to 30+ cm of snow today, leading to some classic winter scenes — including kids finally getting out to enjoy it once conditions improved.

As the low-pressure system responsible for the snowfall pulls away, weather conditions improved significantly this afternoon, allowing many parts of the Avalon to reopen after about 1 PM. Schools, however, remained closed today — but classes are expected to resume tomorrow across the province, barring any unforeseen changes.

Tonight’s forecast is brought to you by Total Snow Solutions. Reliable residential snow clearing with flat-rate pricing starting at $995. They show up every time, so your driveway’s cleared before you leave for work. Serving the St. John’s metro area.

Tonight: Cold but Quiet

Overnight temperatures will be on the chilly side:

  • Near -7 to -8°C around St. John’s and the Avalon

  • -11°C in parts of central Newfoundland

  • Minus teens to -20s across Labrador, with locally colder pockets possible

Skies will be mostly clear, setting the stage for a cold start Tuesday morning.

Tuesday: Mostly Quiet with a Few Flurries

Tuesday looks fairly calm overall:

  • A few flurries across western Newfoundland

  • Isolated flurries possible over southern and eastern areas

  • Sunny and cold across much of Labrador

Future satellite and radar imagery supports a quiet pattern for most of the province through the day.

Midweek Change: Snow, Ice, Then Rain

Things become more active on Wednesday as a warmer system approaches from northern New England and moves across the Maritimes toward Newfoundland.

What to expect:

  • Snow and ice to start, especially Wednesday afternoon and evening

  • Rain developing for much of southern and eastern Newfoundland Wednesday night

  • By Thursday morning, many areas — particularly the Avalon — may be dealing with drizzle or rain

Meanwhile:

  • The Northern Peninsula and southern Labrador remain mainly snow

  • The West Coast likely transitions from rain back to snow Thursday

Thursday: Mild but Unsettled

Thursday temperatures trend milder:

  • Around 6°C east

  • 3°C central

  • 1°C west

  • -1°C Northern Peninsula

Travel conditions do not look great Thursday for western Newfoundland and southern Labrador due to changing precipitation types.

Looking Ahead

Beyond midweek, the pattern shifts toward more frequent mild stretches, followed by returns to colder air — a familiar winter seesaw pattern that looks set to continue.

More details on timing and impacts will be covered in the next update tomorrow morning, with another update later in the day.

Stay safe, enjoy the snow if you can, and hopefully there isn’t too much to clean up tonight.
