Monday Morning Update — January 5, 2026

Good Monday Morning!

Here are today’s weather highlights:

  • A Winter Storm brought widespread 15 to 30 cm of snow to the Avalon Peninsula overnight into this morning, with lighter amounts over adjacent areas.

  • Snow continues to fall, although lighter, over many areas of eastern Newfoundland this morning, with pockets of light snow across the rest of the Island.

  • The weather in Labrador is quiet and cold.

  • Weather conditions improve this afternoon as the low continues to depart

As of 8 AM NST, here are some official and unofficial* snowfall totals from this latest winter storm (I’ll have more later today).

  • St. John’s International Airport: 16 cm

  • Conception Bay South: 20 cm*

  • Paraidse: 27 cm*

Radar indicates that the bulk of the snow has ended, but we are still looking at pockets of snow and a stubborn snow band moving across eastern Newfoundland and the Avalon. This narrow band contains more light to moderate snow and will move offshore and weaken as it does so, behind the outbound low. The loop below illustrates this clearly.

Future radar shows how the snow will continue to end over the next few hours, and that the weather across much of NL will improve pretty dramatically this afternoon. Clouds will want to hang on in the east and over central areas, while parts of western Newfoundland should see some sun today. Except along the West Coast and Gulf areas of the GNP, where onshore flurries will be found through the day, and even into tomorrow. Labrador will also see a fair bit of sunshine today!

Temperature-wise today, we are going to end up in the minus single digits for highs across much of the Island and minus teens in the Big Land. It will be a bit breezy behind the departing low, so wind chills will be quite a bit lower than the air temperature. Bundle up!

The weather tomorrow looks quiet across the Province, and similar to today with respect to temperatures. There will be more areas of flurries along and near the West Coast, which will become less widespread and active through the day. The next weather-maker moves in during the second half of Wednesday and will be a messy and mild one. The Island will see rain across most areas as temperatures rise above freezing, and southeast Labrador will see snow. Western regions should see rain change back to snow on Wednesday night, and it will very likely linger into Thursday before ending. I’ll have details on this, and a bit more about the week ahead, later today.

I’ll post my next update later today, which will provide more detail on the above.
