Here are some highlights of the latest update on the Musgrave Harbour Wildfire, from the Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture, Newfoundland and Labrador.

I’ve also seen some unofficial reports that the fire hasn’t spread much since last evening due to the weather conditions in the area improving.

As of Sunday, July 20th, the Town of Musgrave Harbour officially issued an evacuation order because of an out-of-control wildfire burning just southwest of town. That order remains in place this morning as the fire continues to burn about two kilometres from the community.

Crews are working around the clock with support from municipal, provincial, and federal partners to keep people safe. Right now, the fire is estimated at 1,800 hectares. Thankfully, conditions overnight helped slow its growth — lighter winds and more humidity are buying time, and there’s hope that expected rain over the next 12–24 hours will help with suppression efforts.

There’s a lot of firepower on this blaze. Water bombers, three helicopters, a bird dog aircraft, and ground crews are all working to contain it. As of this morning, officials say the fire is showing minimal movement and is unlikely to impact the town today. It’s also worth noting that the fire has not crossed the highway toward Banting Memorial Park.

According to the Provincial Government, “An Incident Management Team has been established, and the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre is at Level 2, actively monitoring the situation.” They’re coordinating resources and assistance as needed.

Evacuation Support in Gander

If you’ve had to leave your home, a reception centre is open at the Steele Memorial Centre (155 Airport Blvd, Gander). The Canadian Red Cross is registering all evacuees — whether you’re staying at the centre or have made other arrangements, registration is required. You can do it in person or by calling 709-729-0921.

Support is available onsite, including food, water, emergency accommodations, and mental health resources. The Salvation Army and Ground Search and Rescue are also on hand to help.

Road Closures & Air Quality

Route 330 is closed between the Aspen Cove turnoff and A Day’s Getaway RV Park. RCMP and Ground Search and Rescue are manning the roadblocks, and the public is being asked to avoid the area entirely.

Air quality remains a concern for Musgrave Harbour and nearby communities, with smoke in the region. A Special Air Quality Statement remains in effect. That said, Gander’s air quality is considered low risk, and Grand Falls-Windsor is forecast to remain in the “low” category over the next couple of days.

Reminders for Everyone

  • A province-wide fire ban remains in effect. No open fires permitted, period.

  • To report a wildfire, call 1-866-709-FIRE (3473).

  • Do NOT fly drones near wildfires — it’s dangerous and illegal. Drones can interfere with aerial suppression, including water bombers. Fines and legal action may apply.
