Wednesday Morning’s Weather Briefing — July 1, 2026

Good Wednesday Morning and Happy Canada Day. It’s also Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. Lest we forget.

  • Partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies will be the rule across most of Newfoundland today, except in the south, where onshore winds will keep fog and drizzle in place.

  • Highs will reach the lower to mid-20s today, except in onshore-wind areas, where highs will peak in the mid-teens.

  • Rain moves into much of western Labrador this morning, while eastern areas remain dry.

  • As you see above, Air Quality Warnings are in effect for Labrador West and Postville-Makkovik. Air quality is forecast to improve today with a wind shift and the rain (western areas).

Expect a very nice day across most of the Island. Temperatures will climb from the teens this morning to the lower and middle 20s in many areas this afternoon. The exception will be in the south, where fog, drizzle and onshore flow will keep temperatures from rising much above the middle teens. The sunshine will be plentiful for most of the day. However, clouds will increase from the northwest this afternoon, ahead of rain moving through tonight and tomorrow.

Labrador's coast and the Goose Bay area will generally be dry and sunny today. Wildfire activity in these areas will remain today, but smoke in some communities should be reduced as the wind direction changes. Locations from near Churchill Falls to Labrador City and Wabush will see rain through much of the day ahead of a warm front. The same will be true for eastern Quebec and parts of the Lower North Shore. The rain will help remove some smoke particles from the air and keep fire activity in the area to a minimum today.

The rain moves out of Labrador today and arrives on the Island overnight and on Thursday. This will set the stage for a bit of a cooler and unsettled Thursday across the Island. The weather remains unsettled in western Labrador on Thursday, with numerous showers and clouds. Again, good for fire suppression efforts. Futurecast shows this very well. There is also the potential for heavy rain in that area Friday night into Saturday. I’m watching closely.
