Wednesday Morning’s Weather Briefing - April 1, 2026
Good Wednesday morning!
Here are today’s weather highlights:
An area of low pressure will pass south of Newfoundland today. This will bring snow to much of Newfoundland, with the potential of ice pellets over the southern areas of the Burin and Avalon Peninsulas this afternoon. Snow will end this afternoon or evening, with the Avalon seeing the snow end last.
Snowfall totals will be 10 to 20 cm for the South Coast, Burin and Avalon Peninsulas. I expect the Avalon and Metro to end up closer to 20 cm.
The most intense snowfall in the Metro area will be during the middle of the day, when snowfall rates may exceed 3 cm for 2 to 3 hours. Outside of that, the snowfall rates will generally be light
An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for Labrador West, Churchill Falls and the Churchill Valley for this morning for wind chills of -45ºC.
The weather improves overnight, setting us up for a quiet day on Thursday.
Today’s Outlook
An area of low pressure will move south of Newfoundland throughout the day, bringing snow to much of the Island into the evening. Snow has already arrived over southern and western Newfoundland and is heading eastward. It will start falling over much of eastern Newfoundland within the next few hours. The animation below of future radar and satellite imagery shows the timing quite well.
In the Metro area, the heaviest snowfall will occur from later this morning through early afternoon, with rates possibly exceeding 3 cm per hour. Before and after that time, the snow will not be as heavy. Essentially, the morning and evening commutes should be manageable, but avoid travelling around lunchtime. The image below shows the expected snowfall rates throughout the day.
Snowfall totals will be in the 10 to 20 cm range for much of southern Newfoundland today, perhaps. A bit less over the southern areas of the Burin and Avalon Peninsula if there is a change to ice pellets. I expect the highest amounts to be over the Southern Shore and northeast Avalon. The map below should help, and if not, enter your location and then you’ll know what to expect today.

Another thing of note is that it will be quite cold today over much of the island, even in areas that see snow. While wind speeds will not be very high, the snow will blow and drift around very efficiently due to temperatures well below freezing. Expect areas of reduced visibility, especially when the snow is falling heavily at times later this morning.
Newfoundland's forecast for today, April 1, 2026
Aside from being cold, the weather in Labrador will be very nice today, with lots of sunshine. That weather will arrive on the Island tomorrow, setting the Province up for a quiet and sunny Thursday.
