Warmth sticks around for Friday, but the sunshine will not
Tonight
Skies remain partly cloudy to mostly clear across much of Newfoundland, with more cloud cover in Labrador. Temperatures will stay mild for late September, ranging between 7°C and 11°C overnight.
Friday – Rain and Wind Arrive
A system moving out of the northeastern United States and Maritimes will bring wet and windy weather to the province:
West Coast: Rain begins Friday morning.
Central & Labrador: Rain develops by midday.
Eastern Newfoundland: Rain arrives in the afternoon and evening.
Most areas will see rain taper off by Friday night or early Saturday morning.
Tonight’s forecast is sponsored by CU Financial Management.

Rainfall Totals
Southern & Southwestern Newfoundland: 20–40 mm
Elsewhere: Lower amounts, though localized higher totals are possible
Labrador: 5–15 mm
Winds
Friday Morning: Light to moderate, strongest in the southwest.
Friday Evening: Winds increase, especially for the Burin Peninsula, Avalon, and Marystown areas. Sustained winds of 40–50 km/h with gusts to 60–70 km/h are possible.
Saturday: Breezy for parts of Labrador, but calmer across Newfoundland by morning.
Weekend Outlook
Behind the system, Saturday will bring a mix of sun and cloud, breezy at times but still mild. Sunday looks pleasant with sun and cloud and highs near 10°C across much of Labrador and the island.
Tropical Update
Out in the Atlantic, things are getting active:
Tropical Storm Humberto – Currently producing winds of 95 km/h (gusts to 110). It’s forecast to strengthen into a major hurricane (Category 3) by Sunday with sustained winds near 195 km/h. While there’s no immediate threat to Atlantic Canada, storms in this area always need close watching.
New Disturbance North of Puerto Rico – This system has an 80% chance of developing into a tropical storm within 48 hours. Its proximity to Umberto makes this a unique situation, with two potential tropical systems tracking very close together.
I’ll have a more detailed update on the tropics tomorrow.
Final Word
Rain and wind will be the main story for Friday before a much nicer weekend sets up. Stay weather-aware tomorrow, especially if you’re in southern or eastern Newfoundland. And for those with interests along the Atlantic coast, keep an eye on the tropics—this could get interesting.
I’ll have your next update tomorrow morning. Until then, have a great evening!
