Unseasonably Cold Temperatures Return For The Weekend!
I don’t know about you, but today was one of those days where it didn’t matter when you stepped outside—you were getting soaked.
School drop-offs, errands, quick runs out the door… it just didn’t let up. The rainfall totals were impressive in some areas, but honestly, it was the intensity at times that really stood out. That kind of steady, driving rain just finds its way through everything.
The good news is that we’re starting to turn the page on that.

Rain Moving Out, Colder Air Moving In
As of late this afternoon, the heaviest rain—especially over the Avalon—has been pushing offshore. You can already see conditions improving from west to east, and that trend continues through this evening.
Behind the system, though, is where things get interesting.
Colder air is now spilling in, and you can already see the contrast across the province. While St. John’s was sitting above freezing late this afternoon, western Newfoundland and Labrador are already deep into winter again. That colder air is going to take over everywhere as we head into the weekend.
We’re also seeing some flurries and snow squalls along the west coast, and those may linger into the evening with that onshore flow.
A Sunny Start… But Don’t Let That Fool You
Saturday will likely start off bright for many areas, but it’s going to feel nothing like spring.
Temperatures are dropping off sharply tonight, and by Saturday morning, wind chills across Newfoundland will be in the minus teens, possibly near -20 or colder in some spots. Labrador is in a different league altogether.
In Lab West, temperatures are expected to plunge into the -30s overnight, with wind chills potentially approaching -50. There’s already an Extreme Cold Warning in place for areas like Churchill Falls, Labrador City, and Wabush—and for good reason.
Even during the day Saturday, it’s going to stay cold. Many areas won’t climb much, and it’s going to feel like mid-winter instead of late March.
Quick Hit of Snow for the Avalon
As we head into Saturday night and early Sunday morning, there’s a chance of a little light snow over parts of the Avalon.
This doesn’t look like a big deal—just a couple of centimetres at most—but it’s enough to remind us that winter still has a bit of a grip here. Most of that should be done by early Sunday morning.
Looking Ahead: More Active Weather Next Week
After a fairly quiet day Monday, things start to pick up again.
A system moving through Monday night into Tuesday could bring a light snowfall to many areas—generally in the 5 to 10 cm range. There’s also a chance that eastern areas, including the Avalon, may see that mix with or change to rain.
Then attention turns to a more significant system Tuesday night into Wednesday.
This one has the potential to bring a messy mix of snow, ice, and rain across the Island, with more widespread snowfall in Labrador. There’s still some uncertainty around the exact track, and that will determine where the rain/snow line sets up.
That’s one we’ll need to watch closely over the next couple of days.
Bottom Line
Today’s rain is on the way out, but it’s being replaced by a sharp return to winter. It’s going to be cold—properly cold—this weekend, with a brief shot of snow for eastern areas and dangerously low wind chills in Labrador.
And just as things settle down, we’re back into an active pattern early next week.
