Tuesday Morning’s Weather Briefing — August 18, 2026
Good Tuesday Morning!
We are seeing some showers across the Island this morning, and the most activity is near the West Coast (see radar loop above).
Most of the shower activity will be focused over western Newfoundland and the GNP today; however, parts of the interior and central will see some passing showers this afternoon. There is some fog along and near southern-facing shores.
We are also seeing some showers/areas of rain in southeast Labrador this morning.
Much of central/eastern Newfoundland remains sunny today, while the western third of the island remains in the showers.
Labrador sees the weather turn sunnier throughout the day.
Highs reach the teens and 20s across the Province today.
This morning’s update is sponsored by Roebothan, McKay, Marshall.

Here are today's highlights: It's a calm, clear start to the day on the Avalon, with temperatures near 12°C and high pressure building in behind an overnight wave of showers. That wave is still working its way across the rest of the Island and Labrador this morning — showers and a period of rain are ongoing on the West Coast and around St. Anthony, and Lab West picked up almost 10 mm of rain overnight.
No warnings are in effect anywhere in the Province this morning — today is mostly about a split between a clearing, warming East and a wetter, breezier West.
Highs on the Avalon and in Central reach the low 20s today under increasing sunshine, which is a very nice number for the middle of August. Meanwhile, the West Coast and South Coast are in for a soggy, breezy day, with gusts up to 50 km/h possible tonight and into Wednesday.
Here's the regional rundown:
The Avalon and Eastern Newfoundland start with cloud this morning but clear out through the day, with highs near 20°C — warmest well inland away from any lingering coastal cloud.
Central sees a round of afternoon showers before things dry out, with highs also near 20°C.
The West Coast is the wet spot today — expect showers and periods of rain and showers for most areas, with highs near 20°C, and the rain sticks around into tonight and Wednesday morning before finally clearing. The South Coast, from Burgeo through the Port aux Basques area, sees the wettest and windiest weather of the day — rain likely, with winds picking up out of the south and southeast and gusting toward 50 km/h tonight into Wednesday. The Great Northern Peninsula and the Straits see showers on and off today with highs near 18°C, breezy at times.
In Labrador, it's a split story too — Lab West and Central (Happy Valley-Goose Bay) both see a mild, mostly dry day with sun and cloud and highs in the low-to-mid 20s, warmest well inland, while the North Coast around Nain starts with a few morning showers, staying cooler near 15°C with rain arriving again by Wednesday.
Looking ahead, there's nothing stormy on the horizon — the pattern stays unsettled but not severe, with another round of showers moving through Wednesday in much the same west-to-east fashion as today. Worth keeping an eye on just how strong those South Coast winds get tonight, but otherwise it's a quiet stretch. And for anyone watching the tropics, it's dead calm out there — nothing brewing in the Atlantic this week.
