  • The weather on the Island today starts sunny and dry, but showers arrive west this afternoon.

  • Rain and showers move into Labrador ahead of and near a low-pressure center.

  • A more humid air mass slowly takes hold across the Island as southerly winds increase between the Labrador low and an offshore high.

Today’s Synopsis

An area of low pressure will move from eastern Quebec into Labrador today. The result will be increasing amounts of showers and thunderstorms in the Big Land today, beginning in the west this morning and spreading eastward as the day progresses. This low will also drive some afternoon showers over the West Coast and the southern parts of the Great Northern Peninsula later in the day.

The other thing that will be noticeable is the increase in humidity as southerly flow increases to the east of the low and west of a high to the east of Newfoundland. This pattern will start to pull in some very humid air from the south, resulting in a slight uptick in the amount of fog we see along and near southern-facing shorelines by this evening and especially by Tuesday.

Newfoundland’s Forecast

Mostly sunny skies across Newfoundland this morning will give way to increasing cloudiness to the south and west. The south and west will also see scattered showers, or even a little rain, arriving later today or by evening. The rest of the island remains dry. Temperatures will rise from the teens and single digits this morning to the upper teens to lower 20s by the afternoon. Southerly winds will pick up this afternoon and be in the 15 to 30 km/h range across most areas. The uptick in southerlies will result in some fog arriving along and near south-facing shores.

Labrador’s Forecast

An area of low pressure will move through the Big Land today, and this will bring areas of rain, areas of showers, and even some thunderstorms. The steadiest rain will be in the west, but that will expand to the east this afternoon as the low moves that way. Temperatures reach the teens to near 20 for highs. It will be warmest in the southeast and coolest in the north and west.

Today’s forecast for Labrador - August 17, 2026.

This animation below of the future satellite and radar should give you a better idea of how the weather will play out across Labrador and eventually Newfoundland as the area of low pressure moves to the east.

Tomorrow looks a bit more unsettled on the Island, while the weather will improve in Labrador. Looking ahead to the remainder of the week, Labrador will see more rain Wednesday into Thursday, and parts of the Island may as well as a weak frontal system sets up from south to north. I’ll have details on this later today in my extended forecast!

My next update will be posted later today!
