Today’s Outlook

A milder day is on tap for much of Newfoundland and Labrador as an area of low pressure will move from the northern Gulf to and through eastern Quebec today. This places much of the Province in some version of southerly flow, and because of that, milder air will surge north. Many areas will reach highs near or above freezing this afternoon, before cooler air returns later today or tonight.

The forecast for today, December 30, 2025.

The atypical track of this low will send rain across much of NL, except Labrador West, which will see snow through much of the day. The animation below shows how the rain, ice, and snow will play out across the region today.

Expected snowfall between 6 AM and 9 PM today - December 30, 2025.

Today’s expected rainfall - December 30, 2025.

Today’s expected rainfall - December 30, 2025.

As you can see, the weather will improve for most areas overnight. By tomorrow morning, we are left with lingering areas of flurries and the potential for some south-to-north-oriented snow squalls over parts of Labrador and Newfoundland’s West and South Coasts.

The forecast for tomorrow - December 31, 2025.

The exception may be the Avalon, where a weak disturbance moving through during the day will bring another round of rain OR wet snow. To my eye this morning, this looks like an event where the higher elevations will see wet snow and the lower elevations will see rain or wet snow not really sticking. Even if it does snow, we are only talking 2 to 5 cm.

A similar system may move through on New Year’s Day, except that would bring more rain and snow to a larger area of eastern and central Newfoundland, with the chance of rain being more likely in the east.

The forecast for January 1, 2026.

I’ll post my next update later today, which will provide more detail on the above.
