2025 Will End With NL Largely Between Storm Systems

The final stretch of 2025 is bringing a mix of changing conditions across Newfoundland and Labrador, with unsettled weather gradually giving way to a more cooperative New Year’s Eve for most areas.

A broad weather system has been moving across the province, spreading rain and snow at times and creating a mix of conditions depending on location. While the system itself isn’t particularly intense, it has been widespread, especially across Labrador and parts of the Island, before slowly shifting away.

Across Labrador, conditions have been mixed with areas of snow, rain, and transitional precipitation. Weather alerts remain in effect for some regions, though conditions are expected to steadily improve as the system pulls away.

One thing to keep in mind as we move through the evening and overnight is the potential for patchy icy conditions, especially where surfaces remain wet. Travel may be locally slick in spots, so extra caution is advised.

New Year’s Eve Forecast

As we move into New Year’s Eve, a weak disturbance may bring a brief period of rain or wet snow to parts of the Avalon during the morning hours. Any precipitation will be light to moderate and short-lived, with improving conditions through the afternoon.

By evening, skies are expected to clear in many areas, winds ease, and weather should not play a major role in New Year’s Eve plans across most of the province.

If you’re heading out for supper plans, community events, or fireworks, conditions look generally favourable — a welcome change after a more active stretch of weather.

Looking Ahead to New Year’s Day

A new system approaches on New Year’s Day, bringing another round of precipitation to the Island and parts of Labrador. This system appears more likely to bring snow to inland areas of the Island west of the Avalon, with rain more likely on the Avalon. While amounts don’t look excessive at this point, travel conditions could be impacted at times.

For anyone planning travel toward the Maritimes on New Year’s Day, there is potential for weather-related delays as snow is expected in parts of the region.

The Extended Outlook

After we move through the New Year’s Day system, conditions trend back toward more seasonable patterns. Additional chances of rain or snow are possible into the weekend and early next week, but nothing appears overly extreme at this time. Forecast details will become clearer as we get closer.

Have a great second-to-last evening of 2025, and I’ll see you bright and early on New Year’s Day.
