Tonight’s Rain Followed By Summer-Like Week for Newfoundland While A Cool Down Looms for The Big Land

Rain and wind are the main story across Newfoundland and parts of southeastern Labrador Monday afternoon, but the system responsible is already on its way out — and a much nicer stretch of weather is waiting behind it.
Most of the rain across Newfoundland should wind down by around midnight. Southeastern Labrador will hold onto showers a little longer, while the Avalon may see one more round of light rain or showers during the pre-dawn hours Tuesday. Winds on the Avalon will also ease considerably overnight.
The heavier rainfall totals I was watching earlier Monday now look less likely across eastern Newfoundland. Another 5 to 10 mm is expected in most areas before the system wraps up, although parts of the southeastern Avalon could still finish with totals above 20 to 25 mm. Southeastern Labrador will also generally see another 5 to 10 mm, with locally higher amounts possible.
Tuesday brings a major improvement for most of the province.
Sunshine should return across much of Newfoundland and Labrador, although eastern Newfoundland may hold onto more cloud cover through the day. Even with the clouds, temperatures will be very mild for the middle of September. Highs should reach the upper teens to around 20°C on the Avalon, around 21°C in Clarenville, 19°C in Grand Falls-Windsor and 18°C around Buchans.
Labrador also gets in on the warmth Tuesday, with highs in the middle teens to around 20°C. Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Mary's Harbour are both forecast to reach around 19°C.
For a little while, at least, it is going to feel more like summer than fall.
That changes later this week.
A pool of much colder air will begin settling over Labrador during the second half of the week. Labrador West could be down to highs near 8°C by Thursday, with overnight temperatures near or below freezing through parts of the weekend.
And with air that cold, the door opens to something we haven't talked about much lately: snow.
Flurries or snow showers may be possible across northern Labrador Saturday and Labrador West Sunday. Whether they actually materialize remains to be seen, but the colder pattern is a clear sign that the season is beginning to change.
Newfoundland's cooldown will lag behind Labrador by a couple of days. The Island stays mild through much of the work week before temperatures fall sharply heading into the weekend. By Saturday, eastern, central and western Newfoundland, the Northern Peninsula and the south coast are all expected to see highs mainly in the lower teens, with overnight lows dropping into the single digits.
So enjoy the warmer air while it's here. Tuesday and the middle of the week will feel remarkably summer-like in many areas, but by the weekend the weather should serve up a much stronger reminder that we're heading deeper into September.
