Thursday Evening’s Forecast | July 17, 2025
It’s been an active weather day across the province — between wildfires flaring up and the heat dial cranked to the max, there’s been a lot to keep an eye on.
🔥 Wildfire Concerns Across the Island
Crews continue to battle a large fire near Chance Harbour — progress is being made, but it’s far from over. Meanwhile, a new fire broke out today in Small Point, and Route 70 is closed through that area, per the RCMP. Another fire near Lewisporte has been knocked down thanks to the work of water bombers.
Big thanks to Curtis Haynes for sharing video of that response. Impressive stuff — and a good reminder of how fast things can change this time of year.
🌡️ Another Day, Another Record
It was scorching again today, with St. John’s hitting 30.6°C — the second time this week we’ve reached or topped the 30-degree mark. That’s incredibly rare. In fact, 2025 becomes only the third year on record (since 1942) to have two 30°C+ days in St. John’s.
Elsewhere:
Badger: 34.9°C (shattering the old record from 1972)
Terranova: 33.6°C
Gander & Deer Lake: Also hitting record territory
It’s been a hot stretch, and it’s not over just yet.
🌧️ Rain on the Way – Especially for Labrador
Looking ahead, a cold front is making its way in, and with it comes heavy rain for Labrador.
Goose Bay: Up to 60 mm expected
Churchill Falls, Rigolet, Hopedale: Also in line for significant totals
Environment Canada has issued a Rainfall Warning for Eagle River and Upper Lake Melville. Thunderstorms and heavy downpours are possible as this system moves through.
Across the Island, expect some fog and drizzle (especially south) overnight and into tomorrow morning, with afternoon showers (and even a few storms) popping up in central and western areas. At this point, it appears that the east will remain dry.
🔍 Eyes on the Weekend
The heat warning may linger into Friday, but slightly cooler and drier air is set to move in for the weekend — and yes, Labrador might even see some wet snow in the higher elevations Saturday morning.
